Manager of Payroll

Overview

Jonas Software is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager responsible for managing all payroll operations for over 3,000 employees across the US and Canada. This role involves ensuring accurate and prompt payroll execution, compliance with regional labor and tax laws, and efficient payroll system administration. The manager will collaborate with HR, Finance, and external partners to support organizational objectives and guarantee timely payment processing.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage end-to-end payroll processing for employees in Canada and the US.
• Assure compliance with applicable federal, provincial/state, and local payroll regulations.
• Administer payroll calendars, conduct audits, and oversee year-end tasks such as T4 and W-2 issuance.
• Collaborate with Finance to support audits, reporting duties, and accrual accounting related to payroll.
• Lead payroll integration processes during corporate acquisitions by evaluating risks and aligning systems for smooth employee onboarding.
• Maintain robust internal controls and prepare for audit readiness, adhering to compliance standards.
• Supervise and mentor a team of five payroll professionals, managing workloads, promoting process enhancements, and encouraging cross-training.
• Identify opportunities for automation and improvements in payroll workflows and reporting systems.

Qualifications and Experience

• Eight to ten or more years of payroll experience, including leadership roles.
• In-depth knowledge of Canadian and US payroll laws and regulations.
• Solid understanding of payroll accounting practices such as journal entries and reconciliations.
• Familiarity with payroll platforms like ADP and/or Workday is advantageous.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and lookup functions (VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP).
• Experience in leading and developing payroll teams.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related discipline.
• Preferred certifications include PCP/PLP (Payroll Compliance Professional/Payroll Leadership Professional for Canada) and/or CPP (Certified Payroll Professional for the US).

Additional Information

• The role reports to the Vice President of Human Resources.
• Hybrid working environment available with a primary onsite presence in Markham, Ontario, Canada.
• Regular working hours total 37.5 hours per week.
• One position open to replace an employee retiring in Q2 2027, with necessary overlap for comprehensive training.
• The expected salary range is between 135000 and 150000 Canadian dollars annually, supplemented with an annual bonus.
