Maintenance Fitter

Overview

The Maintenance Fitter plays a critical role in sustaining the efficient and safe functioning of mechanical systems within the facility located in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. This position involves proactive upkeep, problem diagnosis, and repairs across production and utility machinery while collaborating with various teams to optimize plant operations and implement continuous improvements.

Key Duties

• Conduct regular mechanical maintenance and reparations on production equipment, utilities, and facility machinery.
• Diagnose equipment malfunctions, determine underlying problems, and carry out appropriate corrective actions.
• Execute and support scheduled preventative maintenance programs with detailed record keeping.
• Offer technical assistance to Engineering and Production departments to enhance machine reliability and operational efficiency.
• Work alongside suppliers and technical experts to upgrade equipment and streamline processes.
• Engage in continuous improvement activities utilizing Lean methods, PDCA cycles, and Six Sigma principles.
• Assist in the installation, commissioning, and validation of new machinery.
• Adhere to all corporate, safety, and regulatory standards during maintenance operations.
• Maintain comprehensive knowledge of spare parts and support troubleshooting in mechanical, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical systems.
• Adjust machine settings and swiftly address stoppages to reduce downtime.
• Translate technical findings into actionable business insights.
• Participate actively in cross-functional meetings and improvement initiatives.
• Handle physical requirements including lifting, pushing, or pulling items up to 20 pounds.

Qualifications and Experience

• Completion of a Fás Mechanical Time-served Apprenticeship including Junior and Senior Trades.
• Possession of QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft – Mechanical or an equivalent nationally recognized mechanical apprenticeship or qualification.
• Minimum of 4 to 5 years mechanical maintenance experience, ideally within regulated manufacturing environments such as medical device or pharmaceutical sectors.
• Proven multi-disciplinary expertise with mechanical, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical systems.
• Competency with maintenance documentation, Microsoft Office, and basic computerized maintenance software.
• Excellent communication skills, problem-solving ability, and a collaborative mindset.
• Experience working with HVAC, humidity control, compressed air systems, chillers, boilers, and cleanroom utilities.
• Familiarity with PLC controls, sensors, servo and stepper drives, pumps, flow control, and indexing mechanisms.
• Understanding of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other structured problem-solving frameworks.
• Experience leading or aiding technical projects or continuous improvement initiatives.
• Knowledge of cleanroom protocols and environments.
• Hands-on skills with electro-pneumatics, laser cutting/printing, belt drives, cam-driven machinery, punch presses, ultrasonic punching/cutting.
• Experience with sensor types such as inductive, capacitive, and through-beam sensors.
• Skills in jig and fixture design as well as heat sealing techniques including steady state and impulse sealing.
• Training or familiarity with PDCA and DMAIC methodologies.
