Machine Learning Engineer

About the Company

A venture-funded SaaS startup is assembling its founding engineering team in India. The company is looking for an early Machine Learning Engineer to join remotely within India. The engineer will play a pivotal role in developing how the product integrates machine learning models, directly influencing future product enhancements.

Role Overview

As a founding Machine Learning Engineer, you will rapidly convert prototypes into deployed features, managing ML models comprehensively within a small team that values high ownership and minimal procedural constraints.

Key Responsibilities

• Rapidly create and deploy ML-enabled product features, often within days, not lengthy cycles
• Tune and assess Large Language Models (LLMs) or smaller models tailored for company needs
• Make informed decisions on building in-house models versus utilizing third-party APIs
• Develop efficient and scalable infrastructure for model training, evaluation, and deployment as the product evolves
• Monitor model usage and performance to inform iterative improvements
• Collaborate closely with founders and product teams to determine ML priorities

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Between 2 and 6 years of professional experience applying machine learning, including at least one shipped ML product used by end-users
• Comfortable operating in environments with vague specifications and rapidly shifting priorities
• Proficient in Python and familiar with current ML and LLM frameworks and tools
• Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal, with a dependable remote work setup

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in fine-tuning LLMs, working with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines, or deploying prompt-based systems in production
• Background working in early-stage startups or founding engineering roles
• Possess a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline
