About the Role
Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia is seeking a full-time Library Clerk V to join our Patrick Power Library team in Access Services. This permanent position is part of Bargaining Unit 179, Group 6 with an annual salary range of CAD 43,410 to 51,418. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate Student Assistants, consulting with staff regarding their assignments.
- Organize the full-time Access Services staff to initiate the hiring/interviewing of Student Assistants.
- Address non-routine inquiries and problems referred by other staff members.
- Communicate with patrons through multiple channels including in person, phone, email, and text messaging.
- Schedule staff shifts at the service desk based on predetermined library hours and required staffing levels.
- Ensure the service desk is staffed at all times, covering meals, breaks, holidays, exams, and special situations.
- Coordinate compilation of the registrar's list of students with outstanding items or fines across Novanet libraries, leading to withholding of marks and transcripts if necessary.
- Verify and adjust charges with consortia libraries; manage holds and charges on students' University Banner accounts.
- Record daily fine payments and reconcile with Financial Services reports, updating Banner accounts accordingly.
- Manage circulation of library laptops including check-out, return, and renewals.
- Handle sorting and distribution of held items between Novanet and Public Libraries, and maintain physical stacks and re-shelving preparation.
- Operate cash register and manage point-of-sale transactions.
- Process photocopy card refunds, and incoming and outgoing faxes.
- Verify patron identification and enforce security procedures, including responding to emergency alarms and notifying campus security during emergencies.
- Desensitize outgoing library materials and check patrons' belongings if alarms sound due to security concerns.
Required Qualifications
- A university degree with at least one year of experience in an academic library, or a Library and Information Technician diploma plus two years of related library experience.
- Experience coordinating, directing, and scheduling casual staff is considered an asset.
- Strong customer service skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent organizational skills, capable of working independently and collaboratively.
- Proficient with MS Office, internet navigation, and email tools.
- Familiarity with academic library resources and systems.
- Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
