Job description

About Auckland University of Technology and the Role

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is New Zealand's newest university with a commitment to student-centered learning and impactful knowledge. With over 27,000 students and 4,000 staff, AUT emphasizes values such as integrity, equity, and respect for indigenous culture, fostering an inclusive environment for all ethnicities, genders, orientations, and backgrounds.

The Perioperative Practice department sits within AUT’s School of Acute and Primary Health, which leads health education in New Zealand by delivering comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate programs across oral health, paramedicine, midwifery, and perioperative studies. These programs prepare graduates to work throughout the healthcare continuum, encompassing acute, emergency, pre-, intra-, and post-operative environments, as well as community-focused and preventive care settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical and academic expertise in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU).
  • Contribute actively to collaborative health research initiatives.
  • Participate in a progressive national program combining simulation, clinical practice, and innovative teaching methods.
  • Develop and deliver educational content in perioperative nursing, critical and acute care, post-anaesthesia care, and simulation-based healthcare education.
  • Engage in research, supervision, and support ongoing programme advancements.
  • Publish research in specialized fields and seek external funding opportunities over time.
  • Collaborate with government, businesses, professional bodies, and community groups, supporting school and faculty activities.
  • Utilize digital resources to enhance teaching and learning experiences.

Candidate Requirements

  • Hold a PhD in Health Sciences or a postgraduate qualification in a relevant clinical area.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with a New Zealand regulatory authority.
  • Possess a current or eligible Annual Practising Certificate.
  • Relevant clinical experience in perioperative practice, particularly in PACU.
  • Early career academics should have foundational research outputs and teaching assistant experience; senior candidates should demonstrate lecturing experience, curriculum development, and student supervision capabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Indigenous peoples.
  • Experience or interest in contributing to initiatives focused on Indigenous, equity, or inclusion is highly valued.

Additional Information

  • This is a full-time permanent role based on AUT's South Campus, requiring 37.5 working hours per week.
  • Salary for Lecturer level ranges from NZD 96,685 to NZD 115,067, and for Senior Lecturer from NZD 118,458 to NZD 154,891, commensurate with skills and experience.
  • The anticipated start date is February or March 2027.
  • Applicants must submit a full CV with publication and grant records, a cover letter addressing relevance to the role, a one-page research statement, evidence of teaching innovations and student evaluations, and a nominated publication.
  • Applications close on 20 October 2026 at 11:55 pm.
  • Reflecting AUT’s commitment to cultural capability and flexible working, staff enjoy access to contestable research funds, support for career development, and strong institutional values centered on wellbeing and inclusion.
