Job description

About the Role

Join the growing People team at M-KOPA as a Lead People Partner responsible for shaping the employee experience and people strategies for Kenya, the company's oldest and largest market. You will be instrumental in supporting the leadership team to design, retain, and develop talent that powers the organization as it scales to serve more than 10 million customers across Africa.

Key Responsibilities

As a strategic advisor to Kenya's leadership, you will lead organizational design, workforce planning, and align people strategies with business objectives. You will manage talent reviews, performance calibration, and succession planning, not just executing but also building these frameworks. Additionally, you will handle employee relations issues, ensuring compliance with Kenyan labor laws, and spearhead organizational change initiatives such as restructuring and transformations alongside business growth.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Over 8 years of progressive HR or People Partner experience, including 3 to 6 years advising senior executives in fast-paced, matrixed environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Kenyan labor law with practical experience managing employee relations escalations end to end.
  • Proven expertise in designing and implementing organizational design, workforce planning, or succession strategies, including framework development.

Why This Opportunity?

This role offers a significant breadth of influence beyond a typical People Partner position, with direct exposure to Kenya’s leadership and responsibility for the people agenda in the largest and most mature market. There is potential for expanded responsibilities as the People team evolves, making this a high-impact role within a prominent fintech company expanding across Africa.

Location and Benefits

  • Full-time, hybrid position based in Kenya.
  • Close collaboration with Kenya’s leadership team and a global People team spanning Africa and Europe.
  • Access to professional development opportunities, coaching, family-friendly policies, flexible working arrangements, and well-being support.

Our Mission and Impact

M-KOPA advances financial inclusion for underserved communities through customer-focused and flexible financing solutions, with special attention to women, youth, and low-income groups.

  • Financial inclusion: Over $2 billion in credit unlocked, 10 million customers served, onboarding 10,000 new customers daily.
  • Connectivity: 2.5 million individuals accessing smartphones for the first time.
  • Economic empowerment: 70% of customers use M-KOPA products for income generation; more than 35,000 agents supported livelihoods.
  • Environmental sustainability: Over 2.1 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided and more than 127,700 circular economy products sold since 2010.

Equal Opportunity and Compliance

M-KOPA is committed to diversity and inclusion and encourages women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities to apply. The company strictly prohibits forced or child labor, complies with legal employment regulations, and ensures that employment terms are fair and voluntary. No fees are charged during recruitment or hiring processes.

Applicants will undergo background checks including criminal, identity, qualifications, employment history, and references. Applications are reviewed continuously and the role may close early when a suitable candidate is identified.
