Job description
Role Overview
As the Finance Manager for M-KOPA Kenya, you will lead the financial operations of the Kenya entity, the origin and largest market of M-KOPA's asset fintech business. Your focus will be on embedding financial discipline into a fast-growing, complex business model that delivers life-transforming assets to millions through mobile money-based lending.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the entire monthly financial closing process including accruals, prepayments, intercompany transactions, depreciation, and foreign exchange adjustments.
- Prepare comprehensive management reporting packs and executive-level commentary for internal and board review.
- Manage the IFRS 9 Expected Credit Loss (ECL) model to ensure accurate provisioning.
- Analyze loan book performance and repayment patterns by customer cohorts to monitor bad debt and provisioning trends.
- Support statutory and regulatory financial reporting compliance, including documentation management for funding and audit processes.
- Collaborate closely with commercial teams to develop unit economics analysis, financial modelling for new product launches, pricing strategies, and supply decisions.
- Initiate process improvements, automation opportunities, and strengthen internal controls, ensuring compliance with IFRS standards such as IFRS 9, IFRS 16, IAS 21, and revenue recognition.
- Engage directly with local and regional leadership to navigate regulatory and commercial complexities in the Kenyan fintech market.
Candidate Profile
- Qualified Chartered Accountant (CPA(K), ACCA, CA, or equivalent) with proven hands-on experience in finance management, including overseeing statutory and management reporting cycles.
- Strong, applied expertise in IFRS accounting standards, particularly IFRS 9, IFRS 16, IAS 21, and revenue recognition, capable of managing end-to-end audit engagements.
- Proficient financial modelling skills, adept at building multi-scenario Excel models and effectively communicating insights to senior executives and lenders.
- Experience or training in a Big Four accounting firm (PwC, Deloitte, EY, or KPMG) is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of or interest in the Kenyan fintech, lending, or asset financing sector is advantageous but not essential; commercial curiosity and instinct are paramount.
Challenges & Expectations
This demanding role requires managing a rapidly scaling business with rigorous reporting standards and dynamic market conditions. Balancing strategic and operational duties is key, including detailed tasks like provisioning model troubleshooting alongside senior-level presentations.
