Lead Flexible Packaging Scientist – Sustainable Packaging & Barrier Technologies

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Lead Flexible Packaging Scientist to spearhead research and development as well as commercialization efforts for innovative, sustainable flexible packaging and advanced barrier coating technologies. This role involves creating plastic alternatives leveraging paper, bio-based polymers, fiber substrates, and eco-friendly coatings, targeting superior moisture, oxygen, and aroma barrier properties.

Primary Responsibilities

• Lead the innovation and development of sustainable flexible packaging films, substrates, and barrier coatings.
• Design and implement high-barrier solutions protecting against moisture, oxygen, and aroma permeation.
• Work extensively with paper, bio-based polymers, molded fibers, hybrid, and multilayer packaging systems.
• Oversee laboratory scale development, pilot trials, production scale-up, coating, lamination, and sealability testing processes.
• Establish protocols for barrier performance, shelf-life evaluation, machinability, and packaging efficacy.
• Validate developed materials and technologies on form-fill-seal (FFS) and alternative packaging lines.
• Conduct competitive benchmarking and tailor solutions aligned with customer and market demands.
• Ensure compliance with food-contact regulations, sustainability criteria, compostability standards, and certification requirements.
• Lead commercialization efforts including cost modeling, customer trial coordination, and technical demonstrations.
• Identify potential patentable innovations and assist in intellectual property creation.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with converters, FMCG companies, startups, research institutes, manufacturing, and commercial teams.
• Mentor and guide R&D team members while driving technical innovation initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience

• 5 to 8 years of experience in R&D or product development within relevant sectors.
• Postgraduate or Doctorate degree (M.Sc. / Ph.D.) in Materials Science, Fiber Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Pulp & Paper Technology, Sustainable Packaging, Green Chemistry, Industrial Biotechnology, or related disciplines.
• Background in paper, packaging, chemical, specialty chemicals, or sustainable materials industries preferred.
