Lead Data Engineer

Position Overview

The Lead Data Engineer will spearhead the architecture, creation, and enhancement of scalable, cloud-based data infrastructure and engineering solutions to support analytics, business intelligence, and data-informed decisions within Group Digital.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Drive the design, execution, and optimization of scalable cloud data platforms, data lakes, and pipelines for Group Digital projects.
• Construct and maintain robust ETL/ELT workflows leveraging SQL, Python, and contemporary cloud platforms to amalgamate data from diverse internal and external sources.
• Design and refine data schemas, storage systems, and processing frameworks to achieve superior performance, scalability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
• Set and uphold engineering standards, quality coding practices, documentation protocols, and governance in data engineering activities.
• Collaborate effectively with teams across Business Intelligence, Product, Technology, Commercial, Marketing, and Content domains to convert business needs into scalable technical capabilities.
• Guarantee data accuracy, security, integrity, and regulatory compliance through continuous monitoring and governance.
• Enable analytics, reporting, dashboarding, and self-service BI by delivering dependable datasets.
• Improve cloud infrastructure, database efficiency, and data processing workloads to enhance availability and operational productivity.
• Diagnose and resolve complex issues within the data platform swiftly to minimize business impact.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to Data Engineers fostering knowledge exchange and skill growth.
• Lead the Data Engineering division by promoting best practices, mentoring staff, and steering technical decisions.
• Liaise with cross-functional stakeholders, vendors, and tech partners to align data engineering projects with business objectives.
• Participate actively in Agile processes including sprint planning, backlog grooming, code inspections, testing, deployment, and ongoing refinement.
• Ensure compliance with corporate data governance, security standards, architectural frameworks, and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or a similar discipline.
• Master’s degree or relevant cloud certifications such as Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect considered an asset.
• At least 7 years of progressive experience in Data Engineering, data platform development, or related fields.
• Demonstrated track record of designing and deploying enterprise-level data platforms and cloud-native solutions.
• Proven leadership in managing technical initiatives and coaching engineering teams.
• Hands-on expertise with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or comparable cloud environments.
