Role Overview
As a Lead Applied Scientist in Responsible AI within BCG’s X Delivery, you will focus on developing and applying ethical, responsible AI systems, particularly for Generative AI (GenAI) products. You will design and implement frameworks for testing and evaluating AI solutions, ensuring safety, security, fairness, and accountability throughout product lifecycles. Your work will directly influence the responsible deployment of AI technologies by collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert support on Responsible AI to AI and GenAI product teams, including independently assessing product risks and conducting product evaluations.
- Engage directly with product teams to address Responsible AI considerations across software development stages.
- Partner with technical teams to conduct risk assessments and evaluations of AI and GenAI products.
- Coach and mentor technical staff on testing and evaluation methodologies for GenAI applications.
- Stay current with emerging frameworks, best practices, and standards by participating in workshops, professional organizations, and research.
Qualifications and Experience
- 3 to 5+ years working in Responsible AI, engaging directly with AI product teams.
- At least 3 years of industry experience building or assessing Generative AI models.
- Proven experience in program or project management and leading teams.
- Strong proficiency in Python programming and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
- Deep understanding of Responsible AI challenges, trends, frameworks, and best practices.
- Familiarity with global and emerging AI regulatory and legal standards.
- Exceptional communication skills for conveying technical concepts across both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to critically analyze ethical, social, and commercial risks associated with GenAI and AI systems.
- Strong passion for innovation and confidence in using contemporary data science tools.
- Experience designing and analyzing experiments with advanced statistical techniques.
- Enthusiasm and hands-on experience with GenAI technologies.
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- Background in research focusing on empirical evaluation, experimental design, or benchmarking.
- Well-versed in software engineering workflows and developer tools.
- Experience working with or evaluating AI/ML models, preferably large language models (LLMs).
Preferred Skills
- Experience in quantitative social science research.
- Knowledge of software engineering best practices like unit testing and continuous integration/deployment (CI/CD).
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and SQL databases.
- Familiarity with AI risk management frameworks (e.g., NIST AI Risk Management Framework).
- Experience with development tools like IDEs (VSCode, PyCharm) and environment management tools (Pyenv, Conda, Poetry, Docker).
- Contributions to open-source projects focused on GenAI evaluation.
Work Environment and Collaboration
You will operate in a stimulating, fast-moving environment focused on advancing the field of Responsible AI. Your role involves close collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior leadership, AI product teams, legal and compliance units, security teams, the Chief AI Ethics Officer, and other members of the Responsible AI group.
