Laundry Officer

About the Role

The Laundry Officer is a Correctional Officer assigned to manage the operations of the laundry facility within a correctional environment. Duties involve overseeing inmate workers, operating and maintaining laundry machinery, and enforcing security and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Operate and supervise the industrial washers, dryers, and other laundry equipment, ensuring proper function and safety.
• Perform adjustments on machinery, including controlling water temperatures and managing operational controls.
• Conduct regular equipment inspections; report issues to property management and perform basic maintenance and repairs guided by manuals and experience.
• Manage the issuing and exchange of worn clothing and maintain accurate inventory records for all clothing, blankets, and uniforms.
• Enforce security procedures by conducting rounds, counting inventory, performing random searches, and ensuring prohibited activities such as ironing or starching unauthorized clothing do not occur.
• Report inmate sick-outs promptly to the Control Center during counts.
• Maintain cleanliness and security of both the laundry building and adjacent areas used for laundry operations.
• Account for all assigned tools and notify supervisors if any tools are missing.
• Manage chemicals and hazardous materials used in laundry processes, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and ACA standards.
• Carry out additional tasks as directed by supervisory staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
• Preferred: College coursework or advanced training in behavioral sciences, correctional services, or related fields; training in cultural diversity or sensitivity is advantageous.
• Must meet applicable state employment requirements.
• Capability to work overtime and endure physical and mental stresses, including the flexibility to work up to 16 hours within a 24-hour cycle.
• Regular punctual attendance and physical alertness on assigned shifts are essential.
• Experience in correctional settings is desirable.
• Possession of a valid state driver’s license may be required.
• Must demonstrate maturity, flexibility, the ability to command respect of inmates and staff, and a high tolerance for mental stress.
• Proficiency in computer use and relevant departmental software is necessary.
