The group manages assets worth approximately $2.3 billion, offering limitless career advancements within multiple industries.

Role Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic Junior Sommelier and Floor Manager to join Esther, QT Auckland's notable signature restaurant, recently recognized in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide. This dual-role requires a passion for both wine expertise and team leadership, balancing duties between cellaring and front-of-house operations. You will collaborate with Restaurant Management to refine the wine selection, boost beverage sales, and cultivate a knowledgeable and confident service team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Restaurant Manager in curating and maintaining a commercially appealing and guest-centric wine list across Esther and other hotel outlets, including management of ordering, inventory levels, and cellar documentation.
  • Enhance wine sales through expert table-side recommendations, pairing advice, and engaging guest interactions aimed at increasing average spend.
  • Supervise front-of-house operations during scheduled shifts, ensuring high service standards and acting as the senior floor presence in management’s absence.
  • Develop and facilitate structured wine training sessions, tastings, and product knowledge workshops to elevate floor team expertise and foster a strong wine culture.
  • Identify opportunities to grow wine revenue by promoting featured selections, managing by-the-glass programs, encouraging staff incentives, and coordinating seasonal promotions.
  • Participate in beverage cost management efforts by monitoring stock usage, minimizing wastage, optimizing ordering, and supporting achievement of revenue and budget goals.

Candidate Profile

  • A sincere enthusiasm for wine with progressing sommelier skills, ideally demonstrated by formal qualifications such as WSET Level 2 or higher.
  • Previous experience working in a premium or fine dining venue with responsibilities involving wine service and cellar management.
  • Proven confidence in recommending and presenting a diverse range of wines, across multiple styles and price brackets, with food pairing insight.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities or strong motivation to transition into a supervisory floor role, with aptitude for team motivation and development.
  • Business-oriented approach with knowledge of beverage cost control and sales target achievement.
  • Availability and flexibility to work varied hours including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Current or willing to obtain LCQ/Manager's Certificate.

Work Approach

  • Embraces the Daymaker philosophy: focusing on details that impact guest experience.
  • Possesses a growth mindset: committed to continuous learning and team development.
  • Adopts an owner's mentality: leverages data and feedback to enhance operations.
  • Leads actively from the front in a collaborative, non-hierarchical manner.

Perks and Benefits

  • Immediate access to Elevate Perks including 50% discounts on dining and stays at EVT hotel brands like QT, Rydges, Atura, and LyLo.
  • Discounted movie tickets at event cinemas and Moonlight Cinema, including Gold Class and Candy Bar offers.
  • Seasonal benefits at the renowned alpine resort Thredbo.
  • Opportunities for accelerated career growth within EVT’s extensive hotel and entertainment network.
  • Paid parental leave and community engagement volunteering options.
