Job description

Role overview

This role is focused on building and maintaining enterprise-level software using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and SQL/RDBMS. The position calls for strong technical depth, structured problem-solving, and the ability to deliver secure, scalable backend systems.

What you'll do

  • Architect and develop large-scale applications with Java, Spring Boot, and microservices-based design.
  • Build backend services and REST APIs that are ready for cloud deployment, scale well, and follow security best practices.
  • Use established microservices patterns such as Circuit Breaker, API Gateway, Saga, CQRS, Strangler, and Event Sourcing where needed.
  • Develop reusable modules and consistent implementation patterns that can be adopted by different application teams.
  • Design normalized relational database structures using SQL and RDBMS platforms such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
  • Tune queries, indexes, and stored procedures to support high-performance applications.
  • Maintain effective data modeling and integration practices.
  • Build software with secure coding standards in mind, including OWASP Top 10, API protection, token-based authentication, and encryption.
  • Use Generative AI coding tools such as Windsurf, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT-based assistants, or similar solutions to improve delivery speed and productivity.
  • Work with modern engineering practices such as TDD/BDD, clean code, and automated quality gates.

Skills and technical requirements

Strong hands-on expertise is needed in Java 8/11/17, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, REST APIs, microservices architecture, and SQL/RDBMS, especially MySQL or PostgreSQL. Exposure to Docker and Kubernetes is considered an advantage, as is familiarity with caching tools such as Redis or Hazelcast.

Experience and working style

The ideal candidate should have 6 to 12 years of practical experience in enterprise application development and be comfortable working in Agile/Scrum environments. The role also requires good communication, sharp analytical thinking, a strong sense of ownership, accountability, and the ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.

Availability

The selected candidate should be willing to overlap with New Zealand working hours by starting work early, around 7 AM.
