Key Role Purpose

The Java Engineer for the Calypso Platform is tasked with designing, customizing, and supporting the Calypso trading and clearing platform. This role blends development, ongoing support, and enhancement activities, collaborating closely with business stakeholders, QA, and DevOps teams to maintain platform stability, scalability, and deliver new functionality.

You will join a high-performing engineering group within Technology and Delivery, focused on developing scalable, resilient platforms critical to market infrastructure. The team emphasizes engineering excellence and continuous improvements aligned with ASX’s mission for a stable, efficient marketplace.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain enterprise applications leveraging Java and its ecosystem.
  • Implement new features and technical enhancements in line with business and platform needs.
  • Provide business-as-usual (BAU) support including incident analysis, root cause assessment, and defect fixes.
  • Design, build, and maintain REST APIs, microservices, and event-driven system integrations.
  • Integrate with upstream/downstream systems, databases, and messaging services effectively.
  • Engage in application design, code reviews, and architectural planning.
  • Drive performance tuning, scalability, and reliability improvements for platforms.
  • Participate in release management, including deployment, regression testing, and rollout to production.
  • Work alongside QA to enhance automation coverage and overall software quality.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and automate deployment processes using modern DevOps practices.
  • Ensure adherence to security, governance, and operational standards within solutions.
  • Document technical designs, operational runbooks, and support guidelines.
  • Engage in Agile ceremonies and promote continuous enhancement efforts.

Requirements

  • 6 to 8+ years of practical experience in Java development within enterprise environments.
  • Deep knowledge of Core Java concepts including Collections, Concurrency, Multithreading, JVM internals, and JDBC.
  • Proven skills in building distributed systems, RESTful API services, and microservices architecture.
  • Experience with Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and surrounding Java technologies.
  • Solid experience with relational databases—Oracle, PostgreSQL, or SQL Server—and advanced SQL proficiency.
  • Familiarity with messaging/event-driven systems such as Kafka, JMS, or equivalents.
  • Competency in Git version control and modern CI/CD tools like GitLab, Jenkins, GitHub Actions.
  • Hands-on with containerisation and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes/OpenShift.
  • Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and performance optimization abilities.
  • Comfortable working in Unix/Linux environments and scripting capabilities.
  • Firm understanding of software engineering principles, design patterns, and secure coding standards.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and collaborative skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background or experience in Capital Markets, Trading, Clearing, Risk, or Post-Trade systems.
  • Cloud platform experience, especially AWS.
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code and automation tools such as Ansible or Terraform.
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools like Splunk, Dynatrace, Grafana, or Prometheus.
  • Experience with performance and non-functional testing methodologies.
  • Exposure to event streaming, real-time data processing, and data platform architectures.
  • Understanding of ITIL processes including Incident, Problem, and Change Management.
  • Experience supporting highly available and mission-critical enterprise platforms.
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps practices and security standards.
