About Lookout Housing and Health Society

Lookout Housing and Health Society offers housing and support services to adults with low or no income who have limited housing options. Their mission emphasizes minimal barriers to accessing services for individuals facing significant challenges.

Work Location and Schedule

This position is based at The Junction in Courtenay, British Columbia. The role requires working Monday through Friday, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with a shift length of 7.5 hours. Consecutive days off are provided and schedules might occasionally change with two weeks’ prior notice.

Compensation and Employment Conditions

This is a full-time permanent role with a probation period of 488 hours, which includes mid and end-point reviews. Salary ranges from $26.72 to $28.48 per hour, depending on seniority, in accordance with the Collective Agreement. The position mandates compliance with WorkSafeBC health and safety standards including successful respirator fit testing, requiring employees to be clean-shaven where the respirator seals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform janitorial duties such as sweeping, floor washing and waxing, and disinfecting surfaces throughout the facility.
  • Handle garbage disposal and empty recycling bins regularly.
  • Inspect and maintain all building equipment ensuring functional mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Conduct repairs and upkeep tasks within the premises including plumbing, landscaping, and suite maintenance.
  • Assist new staff, supervise volunteers, and collaborate with team members to meet guest facility needs.
  • Work predominantly inside the building, but some outdoor tasks may be required.
  • Stay alert and attentive at all times during shifts; sleeping on duty is prohibited.
  • Comply with and support all health and safety policies and programs.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Completion of Grade 12 education plus at least two years of relevant recent work experience, or equivalent combination of education and training.
  • Possession of a Building Service Worker Diploma is considered an asset.
  • Must hold a current Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate.
  • Crisis Intervention Skills Training is a plus.
  • Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Ability to manage stress effectively and organize workload efficiently.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients and coworkers.
  • Experience working with disadvantaged adults in diverse and potentially challenging settings.
  • Physical and mental endurance required to perform job tasks and operate related equipment.
  • Minimum of two years of sobriety if there have been related issues with alcohol or drug use.
  • Must obtain a Criminal Record Clearance with Vulnerable Sector screening.
