Job description

About Rocket Lab

Rocket Lab is a comprehensive space enterprise focused on the development of rockets, spacecraft, and essential subsystems that enhance global connectivity, security, and human exploration beyond Earth, including lunar and Martian missions. We emphasize rapid innovation and practical hardware development for impactful space missions.

Space Systems Overview

Our Space Systems division constructs a variety of space-related technologies ranging from entire spacecraft and payloads to instrumental subsystems like solar arrays, guidance and navigation components, communication modules, and separation mechanisms. The team has contributed to over 1,700 missions involving exploration, manufacturing in space, and defense efforts, collaborating with agencies such as NASA and the U.S. Space Force.

Role Description

As an Ion Propulsion Production & Test Technician, you will manage vacuum chambers used for comprehensive ion propulsion system testing, support the assembly and subsystem evaluation of thrusters and Power Processing Units (PPU), and ensure accurate testing and process improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain vacuum chamber systems including setup, calibration, and real-time parameter monitoring during ion propulsion tests.
  • Execute acceptance test procedures with precision, log test outcomes, and communicate any irregularities to engineering teams promptly.
  • Diagnose test failures collaboratively with production, design, and quality assurance engineers to identify root causes and refine operational processes.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and repair vacuum and facility equipment while maintaining comprehensive records and managing inventory of consumable supplies.
  • Assemble precision thrusters and subsystem components, verifying conformity to stringent specifications using both general and specialized tools.
  • Assist engineering with troubleshooting during builds, refine maintenance protocols, and provide training to team members when required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant trade qualification or degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace engineering, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of four years of substantial experience within a relevant industry sector.
  • Proficient in operating mechanical, electrical, and automated testing equipment.
  • Knowledgeable about thermal systems, vacuum pump operation, and pressure measurement techniques.
  • Skilled in precise mechanical and electrical assembly work.
  • Experienced in troubleshooting complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Adept at adhering to exacting cleanliness and procedural standards suitable for vacuum environments.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard electrostatic discharge (ESD) policies.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on assembly and maintenance capability.
  • Possess good visual acuity for high-quality workmanship inspection standards.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Experience handling vacuum chamber systems and data acquisition tools.
  • Proficient in creating clear, concise test documentation.
  • Proven skills in maintaining industrial machinery.
  • Experience with high-voltage electronic components.
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic, initiative, and composure under pressure.

Key Attributes

The role demands a resilient, team-oriented individual ready to work diligently through challenges and deadlines, accustomed to delivering results in a high-stakes environment.

Compliance and Legal Requirements

For candidates applying to US offices, compliance with US Government space technology export controls (including ITAR) is mandatory and requires appropriate citizenship or legal status. In New Zealand, background and nationality verification will be conducted as compliance with ITAR regulations is required, limiting eligibility to certain nationalities and citizenships.
