Role Overview

The Group Director leads the global Build and Deploy organization, overseeing the entire builder journey from code to production at Walmart. This leadership role involves setting strategic direction, product vision, engineering execution, adoption, and ensuring measurable gains in delivery performance. The leader will supervise teams based in India and the United States and collaborate cross-functionally with product, security, platform, reliability, architecture, and business units.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop multi-year strategic plans, architectural direction, and roadmaps for Build and Deploy capabilities.
• Revamp the code-to-production workflow by minimizing friction and risk points.
• Deliver secure, compliant, reliable, and self-service workflows that foster ease of use and adoption.
• Modernize build systems, artifact management, continuous integration/delivery pipelines, deployment orchestration, and release procedures.
• Create a unified builder experience that simplifies tool complexity and supports multi-environment/platform deployments.
• Incorporate AI-based planning and execution features with appropriate oversight and accountability.
• Define and track key performance indicators such as cycle time, pipeline efficiency, deployment quality, recovery, adoption rates, builder satisfaction, and manual labor reduction.
• Collaborate with platform and security teams to establish ownership boundaries, shared roadmaps, and operational processes.
• Lead and develop a globally distributed organization, promoting clear accountability and succession planning.
• Manage portfolio investment decisions, balancing build, buy, and partnership strategies based on differentiation, value, and long-term sustainability.
• Embed security, privacy, compliance, reliability, accessibility, and responsible AI principles in product and engineering choices.

Partnership Scope

The Build and Deploy organization is responsible for the builder-facing experience, workflows, roadmap, reusable components, and adoption outcomes. Partner teams maintain core deployment infrastructure and runtime operations, working together to ensure seamless integration and shared success metrics.

• Simplified, self-service code-to-production pipelines reduce manual coordination and handoffs.
• Common build and deployment tools gain broad adoption due to improved speed, safety, and usability.
• Delivery performance improves in areas such as cycle time, pipeline success, deployment quality, recovery, and minimizing toil.
• Security, compliance, reliability, and responsible AI are integrated directly into workflows rather than treated as separate steps.
• Platform teams collaborate effectively with defined ownership, roadmaps, service expectations, and escalation protocols.
• Distributed teams in India and the US operate as a unified global organization with strong leadership and succession.

Candidate Profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field.
• Proven success leading large platform engineering or software delivery teams through transformational change.
• Technical expertise in build systems, artifact management, software supply chain security, CI/CD, deployment orchestration, cloud-native delivery, and reliability engineering.
• Experience modernizing complex legacy systems while safeguarding operations, security, and builder confidence.
• Strong product focus including customer research, adoption facilitation, data-driven prioritization, and delivering measurable outcomes.
• Proven experience leading leaders and multi-region distributed teams with talent development and succession planning capabilities.
• Ability to create collaborative outcomes across organizations with varied priorities and accountabilities.
• Sound decision-making across security, privacy, compliance, accessibility, reliability, and ethical AI use.
• Skilled communication with technical teams, executives, and business partners, able to articulate tradeoffs and make tough decisions.
• Experience managing enterprise investments, capacity planning, vendor relationships, and build/buy/partner strategies.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant technical discipline with at least eight years of software engineering experience or
• Ten years of software engineering or related experience without degree requirement.
• Minimum five years in supervisory roles.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in technical field and six years of software engineering experience.
• Experience in developing accessible digital products compliant with WCAG 2.2 AA standards and assistive technologies to promote inclusivity.
