Position Overview

The Groomer, known as Pet Stylist at Petco, delivers expert grooming services including bathing, drying, brushing, haircutting, styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland expression. This role ensures the safety, comfort, and health of pets during grooming while providing excellent customer service to pet parents.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform professional grooming tasks in line with pet parents’ instructions, breed standards, and company policies.
• Operate and maintain grooming tools such as clippers, shears, blades, dryers, brushes, and nail trimmers.
• Monitor pets’ behavior and health during grooming, reporting any concerns to pet parents and management promptly.
• Assess each pet’s individual needs considering coat type, skin conditions, and temperament.
• Engage with customers professionally, addressing questions and offering grooming recommendations and aftercare guidance.
• Ensure the grooming salon and equipment are clean, disinfected, and adhere to Petco’s hygiene standards, including routine maintenance and cleaning.
• Adhere to grooming policies and standards to maintain consistent service quality and safety.
• Assist in training, supporting, and supervising entry-level trainees when necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

• Completion of Petco’s Pet Stylist Apprentice program or prior professional grooming experience or formal grooming training.
• High school diploma or GED preferred but not mandatory.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and solve grooming-related issues with guidance as required.
• Detail-oriented with a dedication to high-quality grooming execution.
• Strong passion for animal care and desire to build a grooming career.
• In-depth knowledge of dog breeds, grooming styles, health considerations, and behavior.
• Proficient in breed-specific grooming cuts and styling techniques.
• Excellent verbal and written communication for effective interaction with clients and team members.
• Ability to safely and compassionately handle animals of varied sizes and temperaments.
• Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as per salon scheduling needs.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position mainly takes place indoors within the grooming salon. Physical activities include bending, kneeling, standing for extended periods, lifting up to 30 pounds, and occasional use of ladders or specialized cleaning tools. The environment may be wet and noisy with direct interaction with pets and colleagues.

• Competitive base pay ranging between $15.00 and $25.00 per hour depending on experience and local wage laws.
