Position Overview

This role entails grading various grains such as wheat, oil seeds, and pulses, providing technical guidance and training to inspectors, and maintaining communication with grain elevators regarding grading concerns. The position involves laboratory analysis, grading, and data review, adhering strictly to the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform all duties expected of Grain Inspector Level 1 and Grain Grader Level 2 competently.
• Manage sample processing including logging, organizing, distributing, storing, and disposing of grain samples post-inspection.
• Clean and prepare grain samples using carter dockage testers for grading.
• Operate, maintain, and calibrate various laboratory equipment such as moisture meters, scales, dockage testers, protein analyzers, and ELISA readers, ensuring all instruments meet calibration standards.
• Assist with diverse laboratory analyses including moisture, protein, dockage, test weight, mycotoxins, germination, gluten, and falling number tests among others.
• Conduct analyses specific to certain branches like malt barley variety identification and audits.
• Maintain laboratory supplies inventory and ensure cleanliness of workspaces.
• Adhere to regulations set by the Canada Grain Act, Canada Grain Regulations, CFIA sampling protocols, CGC sampling standards, SGS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and client-specific specifications.
• Issue initial and final grading reports related to food, container, and industrial inspections, including Government Inspection Services (GIS).
• Assist in preparing comprehensive on-site final analysis and inspection reports.
• Inspect and grade all grain types both at the laboratory and during onsite visits; undertake off-site grading, sampling duties, and additional projects as necessary.
• Collaborate with supervisors and senior staff to address daily production and process challenges, providing guidance to junior grading personnel.
• Review analytical data and share grading results with grain elevators.
• Conduct complete grain inventory audits involving weight and grade assessments.
• Provide leadership and technical direction to peers, indirect reports, and management where applicable.

Qualifications and Experience

• Possess at least a high school diploma.
• Hold a minimum of five years’ experience working as a Grain Grader Level 3.
• Previous exposure to preliminary grain inspections and grading is advantageous.
