Generalist Software Engineer

About the Role

This position is ideal for engineers who prefer to take ownership of entire problems instead of focusing on a specific layer. The role involves working flexibly across various domains including serving infrastructure, control planes, tooling, and hardware interfaces depending on priorities each quarter.

Key Responsibilities

• Transform ambiguous problems into delivered solutions by selecting the appropriate layer to address issues.
• Operate across the technology stack, including services, user interfaces, data flow, and underlying systems.
• Create and maintain tools that streamline workflows for others.
• Quickly understand and safely modify unfamiliar codebases.
• Be accountable for the software you deploy, including on-call responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of three years working in production software engineering.
• Proficiency in at least one low-level (systems) programming language and one high-level programming language.
• Demonstrable experience working effectively across multiple technology layers.
• Ability to navigate uncertainty and proactively make decisions.

Additional Preferred Skills

• Background in infrastructure, Linux, or distributed systems.
• Contributions to open source projects.
• Experience at smaller companies where roles and responsibilities were broadly defined.
