General Practitioner ICU

Position Overview

The General Practitioner in the Intensive Care Unit is tasked with delivering medical care adhering strictly to evidence-based practices, medical ethics, and regulatory standards set by JCIA, CBAHI, Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia, and hospital by-laws.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide superior compassionate medical treatment to patients at National Medical Care Hospitals, ensuring quality in service.
• Perform patient history assessments, physical exams, interpret common diagnostic tests, and devise management plans upon admission.
• Conduct daily rounds on inpatients, coordinating closely with consultants regarding patient care.
• Participate actively in on-call responsibilities, morning reports, and endorsement meetings alongside consultants and moderators.
• Assess new admissions and collaborate with consultants and senior registrars to develop diagnostic and management plans and implement approved strategies.
• Consult with senior medical staff when patient conditions require advanced expertise.
• Maintain meticulous and updated documentation of patient plans and progress notes in medical records.
• Carry out diagnostic procedures such as bone marrow aspirations, lumbar punctures, and cavity aspirations after senior staff consultation.
• Respond to consultations from specialized units like ER, Medicine, and Hemodialysis under ICU protocols and supervision.
• Prepare comprehensive patient documentation including problem lists, discharge summaries, death reports, and specialized reports as needed.
• Educate patients and families in line with hospital education policies, ensuring that education is tailored to their needs and involves them in care planning.
• Conduct health promotion and teaching appropriate to patients' developmental stage, language, culture, and readiness to learn with proper documentation.
• Engage in continuous medical education through departmental activities such as Grand Rounds, tutorials, journal clubs, and morbidity and mortality meetings.
• Undertake administrative, organizational, and any other tasks assigned by the Head of Department.
• Adhere to ICU departmental policies, hospital bylaws, and regulatory rules.

Collaboration and Supervision

Reports to senior registrar, consultant intensivists, and head of department. Coordinates with all physicians, professional service staff, patients, and families. Responsible for supervision of nursing and paramedical staff assigned.

Education and Certifications

• Possession of a recognized medical degree (M.B.B.S. or equivalent).
• Recognition as a General Practitioner by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
• Valid certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Conscious Sedation.
• Preferred qualifications include advanced mechanical ventilation courses and FCCS certification.

Experience Requirements

• At least two years of ICU experience following medical degree completion.
• Current valid medical license in the relevant specialty.
• Additional specialty experience and academic affiliations are considered advantageous.

Skills and Competencies

• Proficient in both written and spoken English; Arabic communication skills are a plus.
• Professional demeanor with excellent interpersonal communication.
• Good physical health and capability to work extended hours under stress.
• Comprehensive understanding of applicable medical by-laws.
