Job Overview
The Registrar in General Surgery is tasked with delivering inpatient care while maintaining exemplary professional standards in alignment with medical ethics, CBAHI / JCIA criteria, hospital by-laws, and Saudi Ministry of Health regulations as per departmental quality guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure that all patients receive superior medical care characterized by compassion and professionalism.
- Provide patient care within the scope of clinical privileges granted.
- Conduct comprehensive patient history taking and physical examinations, interpret diagnostic tests, and document patient status upon admission using designated forms.
- Authorize patient admission from the Emergency Room after consultant approval.
- Evaluate new admissions, collaborate with Consultants to develop investigation and management plans, and implement approved strategies.
- Perform daily ward rounds, communicate with Consultants regarding patient care, and maintain detailed medical records with up-to-date progress notes.
- Consult with senior consultants when patient conditions require advanced expertise.
- Prepare discharge summaries, death reports, and special documentation related to patient care.
- Present admissions in departmental morning reports.
- Participate actively in departmental on-call rotas, manage emergencies, and provide specialty-related medical advice.
- Support senior consultants during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Adhere to patient rights concerning security, confidentiality, and privacy.
- Supervise junior staff performing designated duties.
- Engage actively in departmental educational programs and training activities.
- Follow hospital and departmental policies, educate patients and families according to documented procedures, and involve them in care planning respecting their preferences.
- Implement health promotion and education tailored to patients’ development, cultural background, and learning needs with proper documentation.
- Undertake other relevant tasks within expertise as assigned.
Supervision and Reporting Structure
Reports directly to the Consultant General Surgeon and Department Head of Surgery. Responsible for supervising surgical residents.
Qualifications
- Master's degree or equivalent is mandatory.
- Higher specialty qualifications are preferred if available.
Experience
- A minimum of three years’ experience in the specialty post-Master’s degree is required.
- Possession of a valid medical practice license in the specialty is mandatory.
- Registration with the Saudi Medical Council and/or current Saudi medical license is essential.
- Desirable to have up to eight years of specialty experience after obtaining the Master’s degree.
Competencies and Skills
- Fluency in both written and spoken English.
- High professionalism and strong interpersonal communication capabilities.
- Understanding of relevant Medical by-laws.
- Competency in computer applications.
