General Cleaner

Job Overview

The General Cleaner is responsible for maintaining cleanliness, sanitation, and orderliness in assigned buildings and facilities. The role involves performing a range of cleaning duties to ensure a hygienic and safe environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform high dusting of surfaces above shoulder height using treated dusters in a counter-clockwise room pattern, including vents, lights, and ledges, with proper cleaning of dusters after use.
• Sanitize surfaces below shoulder height such as countertops, chairs, telephones, trashcans, and remove fingerprints and smudges from walls and doorknobs.
• Spot clean windows using appropriate cleaning solutions.
• Clean bathrooms thoroughly using germicidal solutions, including sinks, toilet seats, bowls (interior and exterior), and refill soap and paper dispensers as necessary.
• Empty and line trash cans, wiping them clean if containing liquids.
• Dust mop or vacuum floors using correct techniques and equipment, ensuring to clean under furniture and in restrooms.
• Maintain outdoor grounds by cleaning ash urns, sidewalks, flower beds, curbs, benches, parking lots, and removing trash, spills, gum, and cobwebs.
• Dust mop and spot mop hallways while cleaning glass surfaces multiple times daily and ensuring planter cleanliness.
• Maintain food court cleanliness by sanitizing tables, removing trash, cleaning trays with power washers, and keeping outside eating areas tidy.
• Sanitize floors with germicidal solution starting at room rear, mopping under furniture and behind doors moving outward.
• Conduct visual inspections after cleaning to check furniture placement and overall cleanliness.
• Practice courteous customer interaction by knocking before entering rooms, answering queries politely, reporting issues to supervisors, and maintaining professional conduct and appearance.
• Perform additional duties such as floor care (stripping, waxing, carpet cleaning, buffing) as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills Required

• Basic knowledge of janitorial operations, cleaning methods, equipment, and safe work practices.
• Understanding of toxic and non-toxic chemicals following MSDS guidelines.
• Ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions adequately.
• Effective communication skills with co-workers and supervisors.
• Proficiency operating powered and manual janitorial equipment.
• Capability to interpret cleaning chemical labels and instructions.
• Physical ability to perform tasks including standing, walking, lifting 1 to 30 pounds, pushing/pulling with 5-35 pounds force, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and continuous overhead reaching.
• Good vision with depth perception and hand-eye coordination for equipment operation and cleaning tasks.

Working Conditions and Conduct

• Maintain quiet and unobtrusive work habits, avoiding loud talking and disruptive behavior.
• Stay within assigned work areas unless directed otherwise by supervisors.
• Report incomplete tasks at shift end to supervisors.
• Always maintain a neat and clean personal appearance on duty.
