Overview
This full-time custodial position is based at Cherokee County School District in Canton, GA. The role reports to the Principal or their designee and operates under the School Leadership and Operations division, following the custodial salary schedule. It is a salaried, non-exempt role involving a 218-day work year, with retirement benefits under PSE. The position requires maintaining a clean, safe, functional, and appealing environment for students, staff, and visitors across district facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive direction from Head Custodian, Supervisor, or Administrator to perform custodial duties.
- Carry out routine custodial and preventive maintenance tasks throughout all district locations.
- Clean woodwork, walls, furniture, windows, employing approved tools and cleaning materials.
- Maintain floors and carpets by mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, shampooing, vacuuming, and spot-cleaning using both manual and powered equipment.
- Climb stairwells and use ladders or scaffolding as needed for cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Perform physical activities such as walking on even and uneven surfaces and prolonged standing or bending.
- Manage custodial equipment and supplies, keeping inventory, restocking, and placing orders when necessary.
- Follow and communicate both written and oral instructions accurately.
- Handle cleaning agents and chemicals safely with appropriate protective equipment.
- Arrange furniture and equipment for meetings, events, and cleaning requirements.
- Operate small machinery and hand tools carefully during cleaning operations.
- Respond promptly to safety or operational issues to ensure a safe educational environment.
- Maintain professional licenses or certifications required for the position.
- Adhere to work schedules with punctuality and reliability.
- Participate in job-related training programs to improve skills and apply new knowledge.
- Secure keys, alarm codes, equipment, and supplies responsibly.
- Maintain confidentiality and respect organizational chain of command.
- Exhibit professionalism in interactions with students, staff, and the public.
- Stay updated on developments and literature related to custodial duties.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, federal and state laws, and board policies.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications
- Preferred minimum: High school diploma or completion of the General Educational Development (GED) testing program.
- Basic knowledge and hands-on experience with cleaning, floor and restroom maintenance, and equipment upkeep preferred.
- Willingness to acquire further knowledge through off-duty study or vocational courses.
- Ability to use ladders and scaffolding safely and work at heights.
- Physical capability to lift/carry up to 35 pounds over distances exceeding 20 feet.
- Willingness to work under less desirable conditions and locations.
- Ability to follow both written and oral instructions accurately and complete assignments timely.
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with others.

- Contract Work Year: 218 days annually.
- Pay Type: Salaried, Non-Exempt.

Minimum education
Higher Secondary (Class 12)
