About the Role

Tetra Tech Europe seeks an experienced Flood Risk Consultant to take a leading role in flood risk assessments influencing planning, design, and consenting processes throughout Ireland, with opportunities in Cork, Dublin, and Galway.

Key Responsibilities

In this senior position on the Flood Risk Assessment team, you will oversee flood risk, drainage, and water environment projects nationwide. Your role involves preparing flood risk assessments, environmental impact assessment (EIA) water chapters, hydraulic modelling reports, and technical documents that support project planning and regulatory approval. Collaborating within a multidisciplinary team, you will ensure solutions are technically sound, practical, and aligned with project goals. You will also play a critical role in mentoring junior team members through guidance and review.

Expertise Required

• Extensive knowledge of flood risk assessment, water environment evaluation, and Irish planning and consenting procedures.
• Comprehensive understanding of how flood risks impact development projects and infrastructure.
• Confidence in preparing thorough, technically sound submissions for local authorities, the Office of Public Works, and related bodies.
• Strong grasp of flood hydrology and hydraulic modelling, with practical experience in open channel, surface water, and floodplain modelling.
• Familiarity with software such as Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, ICM InfoWorks, or equivalent is advantageous.
• Capability to critically assess assumptions, review modelling outputs, and ensure fitness for purpose.
• Exceptional report writing skills, with the ability to present complex technical data clearly and persuasively.
• Effective communication with clients, planners, and regulatory bodies, balancing technical accuracy with clarity and applicability.
• Collaborative approach to integrated design, working across civil, environmental, structural, and other disciplines to develop pragmatic flood risk and drainage solutions.
• Experience implementing river engineering, Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), nature-based, and catchment-wide strategies.
• Leadership experience mentoring junior staff and graduates; involvement in project management tasks including meeting timelines, budgets, and quality standards.

Qualifications and Experience

• A degree in civil, water, environmental engineering, or a closely related field is required.
• Chartered Engineer status or active pursuit thereof is strongly preferred.
• A minimum of five years’ experience in flood risk management is essential.
• Professional membership in recognized bodies such as Engineers Ireland, CIWEM, or ICE is beneficial.
• Experience with GIS, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), SuDS, and nature-based solutions is advantageous.

Work Environment

This role is based primarily in Cork, Dublin, or Galway with a hybrid working model involving regular office presence to enable effective collaboration, client engagement, and team development. Some travel within Ireland for projects and site visits is required. Remote and flexible working options are considered based on business and project needs.
