Job description
Role Overview
The Fire Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring adherence to fire safety regulations, conducting safety audits, training personnel on fire prevention, and leading emergency responses to safeguard the workplace.
Fire Prevention and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with standards such as the National Building Code (NBC), Factory Act, NFPA, and local fire regulations.
- Regularly perform fire risk assessments, safety audits, and thorough workplace inspections.
- Maintain all necessary legal documentation, licenses, and NOCs required by fire authorities.
- Ensure continuous availability, proper maintenance, and periodic testing of fire protection equipment including hydrants, sprinklers, pumps, extinguishers, and alarm systems.
Training and Awareness
- Conduct fire safety training sessions, toolbox talks, evacuation and mock drills for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Train the Emergency Response Team on the use of fire safety equipment such as extinguishers, SCBA, hydrants, and rescue methods.
- Create and display fire safety awareness materials including evacuation maps and signage for assembly points.
Emergency Response
- Serve as the Incident Controller during fire emergencies, overseeing firefighting, rescue, and evacuation procedures.
- Investigate fire-related incidents, near-misses, and false alarms and prepare detailed root cause analyses and corrective actions reports.
- Coordinate efforts with local fire brigades, hospitals, and emergency response teams.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain detailed logs for inspections and tests of extinguishers, hydrants, pumps, and fire alarms.
- Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly fire safety reports to management.
- Manage inventories of fire safety personal protective equipment (PPE) and related equipment, creating requisitions for repairs or replacements as needed.
System Maintenance and Permitting
- Liaise with vendors for Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC) for fire safety systems.
- Ensure adherence to fire safety precautions during issuance and implementation of work permits, including hot work and confined space permits.
