Role Overview & Responsibilities

The Field Security Associate will report directly to the Security Focal Person and collaborate closely with the Operations Manager. This role is crucial for enforcing security protocols across Inkomoko’s Kenyan offices, especially in Dadaab and Garissa. Duties include performing risk assessments, developing emergency response plans, managing security procedures, and ensuring adherence to local and organizational safety standards.

The associate will engage with local authorities, humanitarian organizations, and internal teams to uphold a secure environment for staff and clients, with particular focus on the Dadaab refugee camps and Garissa.

Security Management

  • Deliver prompt, credible security updates and contextual reports, including daily alerts and biweekly analyses.
  • Conduct risk evaluations for new routes and areas; advise management on necessary security measures for projects, offices, and personnel.
  • Support enhancement of Standard Operating Procedures and contingency plans by reviewing existing protocols and suggesting revisions or new measures.
  • Assist in managing staff and office-related security incidents and communicate findings to leadership.
  • Provide training to drivers, guards, and field staff on travel security, access control, and situational awareness.
  • Conduct orientation sessions for new field staff as needed.
  • Monitor daily security and safety road conditions, reporting observations to the Security Focal Person.
  • Fulfill other security responsibilities assigned by leadership and assist with monitoring staff movements.

Safety Management

  • Help install and maintain safety devices and security measures for vehicles and premises in coordination with relevant managers.
  • Oversee the management and monitoring of designated safe rooms.
  • Identify safety requirements in operational areas and promptly report these to the Security Focal Person.

Liaison Duties

  • Maintain a robust information network through collaboration with NGOs, UN agencies, and other security stakeholders to gather pertinent safety intelligence.
  • Coordinate with security forces and authorities to foster local acceptance and improve access to operational zones.
  • Represent Inkomoko at security-related meetings and forums as authorised.
  • Engage with government and administrative bodies to facilitate activity execution.
  • Participate in negotiations with community and governmental stakeholders on access issues and prepare detailed reports as required.
  • Update supervisors regularly on procedural developments and legislative changes affecting security operations.

Operational Support

  • Assist logistics and operations teams in planning safe transportation routes and scheduling within unstable regions.
  • Ensure emergency preparedness including fire safety, evacuation drills, and medical emergency plans are current and regularly tested.
  • Conduct audits on security infrastructure such as CCTV, fencing, and access control; advise on improvements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Candidate Requirements

  • Demonstrate a service-oriented approach to support staff and efficient program delivery.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Security Management, Risk Management, Emergency/Disaster Management, Operations Management, or related fields.
  • Possess at least six years’ experience managing safety and security, preferably in social enterprises or comparable settings.
  • Proven capability in managing multi-site operations and leading diverse teams.
  • Strong leadership with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Kiswahili and English; Somali language knowledge is an advantage.
  • Sharp analytical ability and decisive crisis management skills.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • In-depth understanding of the security context in Dadaab and Garissa.
