About the Family Stores
The Salvation Army operates over 130 Family Stores offering a variety of quality donated goods including clothing, furniture, linens, and homewares. Each day is unique, with a diverse range of customers and different donated items arriving regularly, creating a dynamic retail environment.
Role Overview
The Family Store Assistant plays a vital role in the success of the store by ensuring excellent customer and donor experiences that encourage repeat visits. This position requires adaptability, attention to detail, and the ability to manage a fast-paced environment with high stock volumes. Responsibilities include both customer interaction and back-of-house processing.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver exceptional service to customers and donors.
- Receive, sort, price, and display donated merchandise effectively.
- Handle sales transactions, money management, and accurate end-of-day cash reconciliation.
- Maintain store presentation, stock levels, and tidiness as part of a collaborative team effort.
- Adhere to policies and procedures including health and safety requirements and audit controls.
- Support a positive store culture and undertake general duties within the Family Stores as needed.
Person Specification
- Strong customer service capabilities with sound judgment and ability to manage challenging situations calmly.
- Resilient, positive team player who relates well to diverse individuals.
- Physically able to perform regular lifting as part of daily responsibilities.
- Proficient with retail technologies such as point-of-sale systems and tablets.
- Self-directed with the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently under pressure.
- Effective communicator in both spoken and written forms.
- Ethical, respectful, honest, and transparent in work practices aligning with The Salvation Army’s values.
- Adheres to set procedures while applying sound judgment and initiative when required.
- Eligible to work in New Zealand; employment contingent on satisfactory Ministry of Justice clearance/police check.
Working Hours and Conditions
This is a full-time permanent position with 40 hours per week. The role involves working a varied roster from Monday through Saturday and may include some public holidays.
