About the Role
Join the Aviation Security Service (AvSec), part of New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority, in a vital position aimed at protecting the country's aviation system and its users. As an Explosive Detector Dog (EDD) Handler at Auckland Airport, you will partner with a highly trained detector dog to detect threats in airport environments, including aircraft, baggage, cargo, vehicles, and other critical security zones. This key frontline role requires excellent judgment, professionalism, resilience, and a solid dedication to public safety.
Responsibilities
- Perform thorough explosive detection searches across various airport areas.
- Support national security operations and be prepared for deployment anywhere in New Zealand at short notice.
- Make sound decisions under pressure and adapt to changing risk environments.
- Work both independently and collaboratively to maintain high operational standards.
- Communicate effectively and build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Complete intensive initial training and maintain ongoing certification requirements.
Candidate Profile
- Previous experience in operational, safety, compliance, or security settings is desirable.
- Strong communication and decision-making capabilities.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations.
- Wholehearted commitment to safety, security, and public service values.
- Dedication and ability to care for a working detector dog; prior dog handling experience is beneficial but not mandatory.
Eligibility Criteria
- Medically and physically fit.
- Holder of a full, clean New Zealand Driver Licence.
- New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
- Available for rostered shifts including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
- Ready to respond to operational call-outs on short notice.
- Residential accommodation must be suitable for an operational detector dog, including a fully fenced property.
- Must reside within the required travel distance of Auckland Airport.

Additional Information
The starting salary for this role is NZD 72,187 per annum, with an additional NZD 17,553 dog allowance. The role involves rostered shifts and requires flexibility in hours worked.
