Overview

AtkinsRéalis is looking for a skilled Cost Estimator / Quantity Surveyor to join our Project & Programme Management team for significant pharmaceutical and life sciences capital projects in Cork. This role involves close collaboration with clients, designers, contractors, and project managers to ensure precise estimating, quantity surveying, and commercial support throughout all project phases. The successful candidate will contribute significantly to cost planning, budget control, and informed decision-making on complex capital investments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare comprehensive cost estimates for pharmaceutical and life sciences capital works.
  • Perform quantity take-offs using drawings, BIM models, and design documents.
  • Develop pre-tender estimates and benchmark costs using market data.
  • Review and validate pricing from contractors and suppliers.
  • Conduct bid analyses and reconcile tender returns with project budgets and scopes.
  • Update cost plans and estimates throughout project lifecycles.
  • Research current pricing via contractors, suppliers, and market databases.
  • Analyze project costs to identify risks, opportunities, and savings.
  • Support budget creation, forecasting, and cost reporting.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and project teams to ensure scope and estimate alignment.
  • Maintain estimating databases, cost libraries, and benchmarking info.
  • Prepare cost reconciliations explaining differences between estimates and results.
  • Participate in project meetings, providing commercial insights for decision-making.
  • Conduct site visits as necessary to review scope, progress, and construction activity.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

  • Relevant experience in cost estimating, quantity surveying, or commercial management.
  • Experience supporting projects in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, life sciences, industrial, semiconductor, or mission-critical sectors, especially process and mechanical areas.
  • Strong grasp of construction costs, market pricing, and estimation techniques.
  • Proven ability to prepare conceptual, pre-tender, and detailed construction estimates.
  • Expertise in quantity take-offs and cost reconciliations.
  • Excellent analytical, commercial judgment, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Effective communication skills and stakeholder management.
  • Ability to function well within diverse project teams in fast-paced settings.

Technical Skills

  • In-depth cost estimating and planning, including mechanical and process experience.
  • Precision in quantity take-offs and measurements.
  • Competence in tender analysis and bid evaluation.
  • Familiarity with cost benchmarking and market analysis.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and cost reporting with variance analysis.
  • Knowledge of commercial risk assessment, value engineering, and cost optimization.
  • Experience with software tools such as CostX, BIM-based quantity take-off platforms, Microsoft Excel, Power BI, Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Acrobat is advantageous.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Membership with RICS, SCSI, CIOB, or equivalent professional institutions is preferred.
  • Possession of relevant certifications in estimating, quantity surveying, or cost management is beneficial.
