Job description

Overview

An Estimation Engineer is responsible for forecasting the total cost involved in construction, engineering, or manufacturing projects before their initiation. This role demands a comprehensive analysis of technical plans, material requirements, labor needs, and prevailing market conditions to develop competitive bids while safeguarding profitability.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Carry out take-offs and quantity surveying by extracting quantities of materials, labor hours, and equipment details from engineering drawings, blueprints, and project specifications.
  • Estimate and analyze project costs, considering both direct expenses such as materials, labor, and equipment as well as indirect costs including overhead, contingencies, price escalations, and profit margins.
  • Manage vendors and subcontractors by obtaining, reviewing, and negotiating quotations to achieve optimal pricing.
  • Prepare tenders and bids, including technical and commercial proposals, completing Bills of Quantities (BOQs), and ensuring adherence to client submission protocols.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify potential financial, technical, or scheduling risks within contracts and incorporate appropriate contingency measures into cost estimates.
  • Perform site and market research by visiting project locations to evaluate working conditions, accessibility, and site-specific logistical factors that affect pricing.
  • Offer post-tender support through participation in clarification meetings, value engineering discussions, and assisting the project management team during project handover phases.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering or related fields such as Quantity Surveying or Construction Management.
  • Proficiency in software tools including AutoCAD, Primavera P6 or MS Project, advanced Excel, and specialized estimating software like CostX, Candy, Bluebeam, or PlanSwift.
  • Exceptional analytical and mathematical capabilities combined with extensive knowledge of engineering drawings and contracts (such as FIDIC standards), market pricing trends, and strong negotiation skills.
