Role Overview

The Engineering Manager will report directly to the Director of Engineering and lead the team responsible for the Scheduling product—a core component heavily utilized across Deputy’s platform. This position involves guiding and growing engineers of different experience levels, making informed technical choices, and delivering impactful improvements to customers. Scheduling integrates complex factors like employee availability, labour costs, compliance, and business demand, serving millions of shifts globally.

This is a technically focused leadership role where you will gain a deep understanding of product and architecture, contribute technically including some hands-on coding initially, and ultimately amplify the team's growth and performance.

Key Responsibilities

• Set clear goals, provide constructive feedback, and coach engineers for personal and professional growth.
• Foster a culture encouraging idea exchange, learning from errors, and maintaining high standards.
• Communicate changing priorities clearly, identify risks early, and support steady delivery rhythms.
• Recruit thoughtfully and establish cross-skilling to reduce single points of failure.
• Understand the product’s architecture to guide technical decisions on frameworks and build vs. buy trade-offs.
• Collaborate with senior engineers to improve performance, reliability, security, and maintainability of a global multi-tenant product.
• Engage deeply with engineering work through design reviews, architecture dialogues, incident analyses, and prototypes.
• Work closely with Product, Design, and Data teams to transform strategy and customer challenges into targeted, outcome-driven roadmaps.
• Balance immediate customer benefits with necessary technical investments for scalability and responsiveness.
• Communicate Deputy’s vision and priorities effectively to keep the team aligned.
• Leverage AI-assisted and agentic development tools responsibly to innovate and increase efficiency.
• Establish best practices for AI-generated code review, testing, observability, and documentation, ensuring quality and security.
• Collaborate across teams on customer-facing AI features focusing on evaluation, safeguards, cost efficiency, latency, and graceful degradation.

Qualifications and Experience

• Proven experience leading engineering teams or as a senior engineer responsible for technical guidance, delivery, and mentoring.
• Strong technical judgment capable of engaging in detailed design discussions and explaining decisions to varied audiences.
• Background in delivering and supporting customer-facing software balancing speed, reliability, and maintainability.
• History of developing engineers through clear expectations, ongoing feedback, and thoughtful coaching.
• Experience collaborating with Product and Design teams to define priorities and measurable outcomes.
• Practical experience using AI development tools and ability to critically assess their outputs.
• Ability to create momentum amid ambiguity by identifying constraints, uniting stakeholders, and making decisive choices.

Preferred Advantages

• Experience in building and managing distributed, cloud-native, or multi-tenant SaaS ecosystems at scale.
• Familiarity with resilient, event-driven system design and complex data storage architectures (relational or NoSQL).
• Hands-on experience shipping production systems powered by large language models (LLMs) or agentic AI features.
• Work history in workforce management, scheduling, or other operationally intricate domains.

Technology Stack

The team works with diverse languages and tools such as PHP, Go, and Python, primarily on AWS infrastructure. The focus is on deep technical expertise and the capability to learn rather than exact technology matches.
