Job description
About the Role
We are seeking an Engineering Manager passionate about empowering software engineers with ownership and autonomy to deliver impactful results. At Ashby, we're cultivating a different engineering culture—one where engineers shape product directions, create specifications, and self-manage projects without relying heavily on traditional processes. This role focuses on enabling engineers to thrive through ownership rather than micromanagement.
Responsibilities
- Coach engineers to autonomously own large, loosely defined projects from conception through delivery, intervening only when needed.
- Provide constructive and strategic feedback on product and technical specifications to help engineers refine scope and quality without making final decisions.
- Write and maintain code, whether fixing bugs, improving developer tooling, or enhancing test coverage, while balancing managerial responsibilities.
- Lead by example through hands-on involvement without becoming a bottleneck in critical project paths.
- Build and nurture a scaling engineering team in Europe by fostering skill development and an empowering environment with minimal distractions.
What We Value
- Passion for both technical excellence and people management.
- Courage to challenge common practices and avoid the status quo, preferring innovative, optimized workflows.
- Ability to communicate empathetically and effectively to drive individual and organizational change.
- Deep understanding of what distinguishes exceptional engineers and how to hire and grow top talent.
- A high standard for individual and team performance, coupled with a hands-on mindset.
- Thriving in high-autonomy, fast-paced startup environments where leadership includes multiple roles and continuous learning.
About Ashby's Engineering Culture
Our culture centers around providing engineers significant ownership, minimal process overhead, and deliberate communication. Engineers are responsible for full project lifecycles including problem research, writing product specs, wireframing, and implementation. This autonomy fosters creativity and excellence but requires a team committed to collaboration and delivering reliable outcomes.
We invest heavily in developer experience, including fast CI/CD, real-time debugging tools, and reusable core components supporting rapid custom product creation.
Additional Information
Our engineering team values sustainable work hours, prioritizing focus time with <2 hours of meetings weekly. We support team bonding through biannual in-person gatherings and regional meetups with allocated budgets.
The role is remote with a base location in Manchester, England, focusing on growing a European engineering team of 25+ experienced professionals.
