Job description
Overview
Ashby is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to join their team remotely in Canada. This role is ideal for former engineers with a strong track record of building outstanding products and leading engineering teams. The company is rapidly expanding its Engineering division and aims to double the team size over the next year, offering a unique opportunity to shape the growth and culture of a high-performing group.
About Ashby
Ashby's core product, Ashby All-in-One, is a highly powerful and user-friendly talent acquisition platform that consolidates the capabilities of multiple competing products, used by customers such as Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake. The company boasts impressive growth metrics, including annual recurring revenue in the tens of millions, over 100% year-over-year growth, extremely low churn, and a healthy financial runway.
Role and Responsibilities
- Lead a team of 3-5 engineers with plans to hire an additional 3-5 across various specializations including product engineering, site reliability, and design engineering.
- Provide constructive feedback on product and technical specifications to guide engineers on scope and quality, influencing decisions without direct control.
- Mentor engineers to independently lead large, loosely defined projects and deliver results with minimal oversight.
- Maintain hands-on engineering skills by assisting in debugging issues, contributing bug fixes, and enhancing developer experience tools, while avoiding critical path dependencies.
- Initiate and spearhead department-wide and company-wide projects such as improving code review processes, refining interview techniques, and enhancing demo data generation to aid cross-functional teams.
Engineering Culture
- Operate with minimal processes, empowering engineers with ownership over product and design decisions to foster creativity and responsibility.
- Encourage natural collaboration and deliberate communication among a diverse and skilled engineering team that values humility and kindness.
- Invest in developer tooling including fast CI/CD pipelines, comprehensive debugger tools, and custom building blocks to enhance product development velocity.
- Utilize AI-based tools to automate repetitive tasks such as issue triaging, code generation, and code reviews, supporting engineers with an unlimited token budget.
- Commit to diversity, ensuring significant representation of underrepresented groups in engineering roles and leadership, alongside supportive policies like ample paid family leave.
Work-Life Balance
Ashby promotes a sustainable pace of work akin to running a marathon rather than a sprint. Employees enjoy flexible schedules with low meeting overhead, unlimited paid time off with actual usage encouraged, and support for personal commitments including family care.
Candidate Profile: Who Should Not Apply
- Individuals who do not enjoy coding or keeping their technical skills current.
- Those who rigidly adhere to existing norms and resist change or innovation.
- Candidates pursuing management solely as the next available career path rather than from a leadership ambition.
- Managers comfortable with less experienced teams lacking autonomy and ownership.
- Those who perceive senior engineering roles as primarily administrative rather than leadership by example.
- Individuals skeptical of building a large, high-functioning engineering team without traditional heavy processes.
Interview Process
- Initial introduction call.
- Technical pairing session with existing leadership in the company codebase.
- Leadership experience interview.
- Interviews with VP and Head of Engineering.
- Final round including engineers and fellow engineering managers.
- Reference checks following final interviews.
