Job description
About the Role
We are seeking an Engineering Manager to join our European team, focused on fostering a unique engineering culture where software engineers lead product specifications, own projects end-to-end, and thrive in an environment of autonomy and innovation. This role emphasizes developing engineering team capabilities, improving processes, and creating a supportive culture rather than traditional sprint or product management tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Coach engineers to independently lead substantial, loosely defined projects from start to finish with minimal intervention.
- Review and provide constructive feedback on product and technical specifications to guide engineers in scope and quality decisions without finalizing those decisions yourself.
- Directly contribute through hands-on coding to troubleshoot issues, deliver bug fixes, or enhance developer tools while avoiding critical path dependencies.
- Manage a small team of direct reports, ideally no more than six, to allow personalized guidance, observation, and engagement in technical details.
- Collaborate on enhancing systems like demo data generation to maintain technical familiarity and positively impact various departments.
- Build and nurture a collaborative, high-trust culture that prioritizes empowerment and autonomy over rigid processes.
Candidate Profile
- Passionate about both technical engineering and leadership, with a genuine enthusiasm for coaching and empowering teams.
- Strong communication skills needed to facilitate change and navigate diverse viewpoints among engineers.
- High standards for team performance and willingness to give detailed feedback to all levels of engineers.
- A deep understanding of what makes exceptional engineers and experience with recruiting and developing engineering talent.
- Comfortable supporting engineers to make product and technical decisions themselves instead of leading those decisions.
- Enjoy working in start-up environments with multiple responsibilities and fast feedback mechanisms.
- Technical proficiency across infrastructure, backend, and frontend technologies to engage meaningfully with the team.
Engineering Culture and Values
- Minimal process with maximum ownership entrusted to engineers for decision-making.
- Encouragement of natural collaboration combined with deliberate, thoughtful communication to minimize meetings and maximize focus time.
- Investment in tooling and abstractions that increase developer efficiency and product versatility.
- Commitment to building a diverse and talented engineering team.
Additional Information
We offer an engineering environment that values transparency, innovation, and autonomy, where teams are expected to drive solutions end-to-end and flourish in a culture that emphasizes trust and high standards. Regular in-person gatherings twice yearly and a budget for local meet-ups support team connection.
