Role Overview

We seek a Senior Staff Engineer or Engineering Director to lead design, deployment, and lifecycle management of enterprise-scale cloud database platforms. This role involves overseeing multi-cloud architectures on Alibaba Cloud and AWS, ensuring performance, availability, and cost efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and optimize cloud-based databases on Alibaba Cloud (RDS, PolarDB, Redis, MongoDB) and AWS (RDS, Aurora, ElastiCache, DynamoDB).
• Choose suitable database types (relational, NoSQL, NewSQL) and service models (managed vs. self-built) aligning with business needs.
• Implement high availability and disaster recovery strategies such as cross-zone deployments, multi-AZ setups, and cross-region replication.
• Monitor database health and performance using native cloud tools (Alibaba CloudMonitor, AWS CloudWatch) and third-party systems like Prometheus and Grafana.
• Analyze and tune SQL performance by addressing slow queries, lock conflicts, and resource constraints.
• Efficiently resolve production incidents including replication delays, connection pool limits, and storage scaling challenges.
• Manage access control through Alibaba Cloud RAM policies and AWS IAM roles, ensuring adherence to security standards.
• Perform database upgrades and audit log reviews to maintain compliance with GDPR, MLPS, and other regulations.
• Automate deployment and operations using Terraform, Ansible, and cloud-native orchestration tools.
• Optimize cloud spending via auto-scaling, reserved instances, and storage tiering strategies.
• Collaborate with development teams on database design audits, SQL code standardization, and DevOps integration.
• Lead and manage DBA teams to meet project deadlines and resolve incidents effectively.

Candidate Profile

• Technical Expertise: Proficient with at least one major public cloud database service (Alibaba Cloud or AWS) with a working knowledge of the other.
• Comprehensive understanding of mainstream databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Redis, plus advanced SQL optimization and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience with cloud database migration tools including AWS DMS and Alibaba Cloud DTS, with knowledge of cross-cloud sync solutions.
• Experience: Minimum five years as a DBA, including at least two years managing cloud databases.
• Hands-on with large-scale (terabyte-level) databases, including sharding and read/write splitting techniques.
• Preferred experience includes leading cloud migrations, disaster recovery drills, or hybrid cloud initiatives.
• Soft Skills: Strong documentation abilities for SOPs and contingency planning; excellent communication skills to liaise with multiple teams.
• Education & Certifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher in CS, Software Engineering, or related fields. Alibaba Cloud ACP/ACE (Database) or AWS Database Specialty certifications are advantageous.
