Role Summary

The Retail Associate helps ensure that customers enjoy positive shopping experiences by providing courteous greetings, respectful treatment to colleagues, and maintaining cleanliness and proper merchandise presentation. Associates are expected to be fully engaged in assigned duties throughout their shifts and may perform a variety of tasks across store areas depending on business needs. They are also expected to assist with additional responsibilities when necessary to meet customer service and operational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prioritize safety by consistently practicing safe behaviors and maintaining a secure shopping environment.
  • Keep sales floors clear, safe, and unobstructed, promptly addressing or reporting any hazards to management.
  • Interact respectfully and professionally with customers and fellow associates at all times, including recognizing colleagues through company recognition programs.
  • Assist customers effectively by being register-trained, offering merchandise support, and responding to inquiries politely and knowledgeably.
  • Respond quickly to customer service requests and resolve issues courteously, escalating to store leadership when necessary.
  • Uphold the Ross brand through professional behavior and adherence to dress codes.
  • Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and disinfecting public and store areas to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Conduct daily merchandise organization, sizing, and recovery according to company standards to ensure an attractive, orderly store presentation.
  • Quickly and accurately merchandise incoming products per monthly guidelines, maintaining familiarity with brands to assist customers efficiently.
  • Know and support Loss Prevention policies, awareness programs, and merchandise protection standards.
  • Handle confidential information and transactions responsibly, maintaining integrity and honesty.
  • Adhere to mark-out-of-stock protocols and report to leadership for approval before disposing of merchandise.
  • Follow policies for cash, check, charge card refunds, voids, and offline transactions, maintaining accuracy and vigilance in handling money.
  • Work efficiently with urgency to maximize productivity, minimizing unnecessary steps and maintaining best store practices.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong communication skills for interacting respectfully and cooperatively with customers, associates, and leadership.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations common in retail settings.
  • Comfortable using store equipment such as product data terminals (PDT), registers, and computers as needed.
  • Physical capability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb, reach, stoop, and occasionally lift over 25 pounds throughout the shift.
  • Competence in using janitorial supplies, rolling racks, and ladders.
  • For stockroom shifts, able to frequently push, pull, and lift more than 20 pounds.
