Director, Solutions Engineering

About the Role

As a Director of Solutions Engineering at Digital Realty, you will lead and nurture a growing team of Solution Engineers. This leadership role combines hands-on technical expertise with team management duties, requiring you to hire, train, and balance workloads while ensuring all targets are achieved. Acting as a key liaison between Sales, internal departments, and clients, you will provide expert solutions for complex technical infrastructure requirements primarily in data centre environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and motivate the technical sales team, fostering their development and effectiveness.
• Engage directly with prospects, conducting site tours, sales presentations, offer preparation, pricing, and negotiations.
• Facilitate communication across all project stakeholders, serving as the central point of contact.
• Analyze customer needs to architect and present tailored preliminary solutions.
• Support the response process for customer RFPs and develop cost and profitability models for large opportunities.
• Provide subject matter expertise on data centre infrastructure, including building-specific considerations.
• Offer on-site assistance to remote Design and Construction teams throughout bidding, building, and commissioning phases.
• Participate in sales forecasting, pipeline management, and market intelligence activities.
• Represent the company at technical forums and industry events, sharing insights and gathering market trends.
• Monitor and interpret shifts in prospect and client needs as well as market trends related to tenants.

Candidate Profile & Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years experience in data centre or colocation sales engineering, or 8+ years in engineering consulting, mission-critical facility hosting, or related fields.
• Proven capability to collaborate with customers and internal teams to design solutions involving cabinet setups, electrical systems, cooling, and connectivity.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly to technical and business audiences.
• Experience leading and inspiring technical sales teams.
• Strong technical knowledge in at least one of the following: electrical provisioning/configuration or mechanical cooling systems.
• Experienced in project management with skills in document handling and tracking project progress.
• Ability to perform effectively under pressure and proactively address challenges and changes.
• Well-organized, detail-oriented, and open to new methodologies.
• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Visio, AutoCAD, and Adobe Acrobat.
• A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Willingness to travel 20-40% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience overseeing data centre or telecom projects, managing design teams, subcontractors, and construction efforts.
• Track record of leading distributed teams across APAC or Southeast Asia regions.
• Competency in estimating and managing costs related to client installations or projects.
• Understanding of telecom carrier operations and business models.
• Familiarity with regulations and standards applicable to data/communications projects, especially meet-me rooms and colocation environments.
