Overview
Join the elite Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team supporting Macquarie's Banking and Financial Services armed with a growth mindset. Role Responsibilities
As the Director of Engineering reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will lead a skilled team of Engineering Managers and technical leads. Your expertise will span a wide software engineering spectrum and cloud-native architectures, actively participating in design evaluations and code reviews. Your portfolio covers all facets of SRE, including observability, Service Level Objectives (SLOs), release engineering, resilience, capacity management, and innovative application of AI within SRE practices.
Collaborating closely with engineering units across the organisation, you will promote widespread adoption of best practices and tooling. Your teams will conceptualise quality standards, develop systems to assess them—from evaluation frameworks and safety guardrails to traceability and cost monitoring—and harness AI-driven agents for incident management and telemetry analysis. Continuous enhancement of development methodologies, architectural guidance, and elevating team capabilities through mentorship will be key facets of your leadership.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum 5 years experience managing and nurturing successful, self-directed engineering teams
- At least 10 years of hands-on software engineering and system design proficiency with languages such as Java, Go, or equivalents, including deploying cloud-based solutions
- Proven success in delivering robust platforms, services, or developer tools leveraged organization-wide
- Expertise in contemporary development workflows like CI/CD, automated tests, and infrastructure-as-code
- In-depth knowledge across reliability engineering disciplines including SLOs, observability, resiliency, and capacity planning
- Practical experience operating AI or large language model-backed systems in production or demonstrated ability to quickly master emerging technical specialisations
- Exceptional stakeholder communication skills across organizational levels
- Proactive mindset with the ability to drive organizational change
- Track record in leading substantial engineering projects to successful completion
