Job description
Role Overview
This full-time position based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, reports directly to the CTO and involves setting the strategic vision for platform engineering. The Director of Engineering will lead efforts to advance automation, scalability, and operational excellence within all development groups. This senior leadership role manages the DevOps and SRE teams, fosters innovation, accountability, and drives adoption of AI-enhanced engineering workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and execute the strategy and roadmap for the Internal Developer Platform as a product, delivering self-service infrastructure and standardized CI/CD pipelines.
- Automate software development lifecycle processes to minimize manual tasks and reduce operational burden.
- Lead and mentor DevOps and SRE teams, promoting an ownership-driven, automation-first engineering culture.
- Manage recruitment, performance, and succession planning for the engineering function.
- Scale engineering best practices through training and enablement rather than centralized control.
- Present platform engineering metrics and status to senior leadership and stakeholders.
- Champion the use of AI tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and Copilot to improve coding, incident analysis, and testing pipelines while maintaining security compliance.
- Drive continuous improvement targeting faster delivery, fewer changes that fail, and reduced operational overhead.
- Architect scalable, reliable CI/CD systems with quick feedback mechanisms.
- Implement automated quality gates across testing and security, including SAST, DAST, and dependency/container scanning.
- Standardize Infrastructure as Code and Configuration as Code practices for consistency and auditability.
- Lead the observability strategy involving metrics, logs, traces, and SLO/SLI frameworks with proactive monitoring and automated remediation.
- Promote reliability engineering practices such as blameless postmortems and act as senior escalation for major incidents.
- Provide expert technical guidance on distributed systems challenges and performance optimization.
- Embed security principles into platform design, managing RBAC, secrets, network policies, and automated compliance in coordination with information security teams.
- Oversee cloud and infrastructure budget management for cost and resource optimization.
- Collaborate with engineering, QA, and product peers to align platform initiatives with business goals.
- Ensure teams are trained to utilize platform services and AI-assisted development tools effectively.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Over 10 years’ experience in DevOps, SRE, or Platform Engineering, with at least 5 years in senior leadership managing multiple teams or team leads.
- Proven success in defining and delivering platform or infrastructure strategies for engineering organizations.
- Strong hands-on background in building scalable platforms and distributed systems, influencing architectural decisions.
- Experience leading Internal Developer Platform development and adoption.
- Expertise in CI/CD, automation, and managing infrastructure at large scale.
- Experience implementing AI engineering tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Copilot.
- Track record of improving SDLC metrics like lead time, deployment frequency, and MTTR.
- Deep knowledge of Kubernetes and container technologies.
- Experience with major cloud providers including AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Competence in Infrastructure as Code solutions like Terraform and configuration management tools such as Ansible.
- Proficiency in scripting/programming languages like Python or Go.
- Use of observability platforms including Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.
- Firm grasp of reliability engineering concepts, including Service Level Objectives (SLOs), Indicators (SLIs), and error budgets.
- Leadership in DevSecOps and security best practices, preferably in regulated industries such as banking or financial services.
- Knowledge of both SQL and NoSQL database systems.
- Experience managing technology budgets, cloud spend, and vendor relationships, focusing on cost efficiency.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit, grow, and retain high-caliber engineering teams.
- Strong systems thinking aptitude to simplify complex environments and excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Comfort working in fast-paced, high-scale technology settings.
