Job description
Role Overview
Our client is looking for an experienced Director of Engineering to lead their software engineering division and shape its strategic direction long term. This senior leadership role requires steering engineering strategy, supervising complex software projects, and ensuring technology, teams, and processes align with organizational and client priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the engineering strategy and multi-year roadmap covering Software, Hardware, and Systems aligned with business goals and corporate technology plans.
- Provide leadership over engineering teams including organizational design, workforce and succession planning, talent growth, and skill development.
- Mentor engineering managers, leaders, and teams to promote a culture emphasizing accountability, collaboration, innovation, and ongoing learning.
- Manage a portfolio of initiatives to meet priorities, resources, budgets, schedules, and lifecycle aims effectively.
- Ensure compliance with development processes, secure software practices, quality standards, software assurance, and regulatory or certification mandates.
- Establish governance and performance metrics for engineering output, quality, operations, workforce capacity, and improvement.
- Drive delivery of secure, reliable, maintainable, and scalable software products on schedule and quality objectives.
- Oversee technical, delivery, quality, security, and operational risks and enforce mitigation and escalation procedures.
- Collaborate with Product Management, Project Management, Operations, Quality, Sales, and stakeholders to align technology investments with client and business requirements.
- Promote common standards, reusable platforms, knowledge sharing, and integration across teams and organizations.
- Lead architectural and technological decision-making, including cloud, microservices, automation, AI, and new technologies evaluation.
- Enhance engineering processes, tooling, developer experience, productivity, and software delivery maturity.
- Handle resource and budget planning for staffing, contractors, tools, infrastructure, and department expenditures.
- Represent engineering leadership in senior forums, communicating strategy, risks, progress, and performance to executives and stakeholders.
- Support key customer, partner, audit, proposal, and business development initiatives with technical and organizational leadership.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related discipline; Master’s or management/business qualifications preferred.
- At least 10 years progressive experience in software or product development with 5+ years in senior leadership roles overseeing multiple teams or large engineering functions.
- Proven success developing and executing software or technology strategies supporting business growth.
- History of leading development and delivery of complex, high-quality software or integrated systems.
- Experience managing budgets, resource allocation, organizational capacity, portfolio prioritization, and workforce planning.
- In-depth knowledge of software architectures, distributed and embedded systems, RTOS, cloud technologies, microservices, DevOps, CI/CD, and secure development practices.
- Background in software assurance, quality, cybersecurity, and compliance in safety-critical or regulated industries preferred.
- Skilled in improving governance, engineering processes, performance tracking, development environments, and organizational effectiveness.
- Strong business acumen linking engineering investments to customer value, risk management, and business results.
- Exceptional leadership with demonstrated experience coaching managers, building effective teams, and succession planning.
- Excellent decision-making and judgment while navigating ambiguity, competing priorities, and complex risks.
- Strong communication, influence, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills for diverse audiences including executives.
- Experience operating successfully in matrixed, cross-functional, or international organizations.
- Knowledge of Agile, Scrum, Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Jama, and Microsoft Project tools and methodologies.

Compensation and Benefits
The role offers an annual salary ranging from $185,000 to $215,000 plus bonuses, depending on qualifications and experience.
