The Customer Security Team

This team safeguards eBay’s vast customer base from digital identity-related crimes. We specialize in understanding how identities get compromised, leveraging intelligence to build security measures that protect users. Our focus areas include developing security intelligence, trust evaluation, detection systems, and data infrastructure to secure consumer identity at scale by analyzing cybercrime ecosystems such as phishing, malware, breached credentials, and malicious activities combined with eBay’s own telemetry.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop production-grade systems transforming cybercrime data into trusted identity signals.
• Build scalable data pipelines handling intelligence from phishing attacks, infostealer malware, credential theft, and breach data.
• Correlate external threat information with proprietary data to identify compromised identities proactively.
• Create reusable security datasets to enhance confidence in authentication, account recovery, and fraud prevention.
• Develop device intelligence platforms for identifying trusted versus attacker-controlled devices, including device reputation, binding, emulator detection, hardware trust, and browser integrity.
• Integrate device intelligence with authentication and recovery systems to strengthen security.
• Design trust signal systems combining multiple data sources to continuously assess consumer identity throughout their interactions.
• Construct identity confidence models enabling adaptive authentication and risk-based protections.
• Build APIs and services facilitating consistent consumption of security intelligence throughout eBay’s platforms.
• Design and implement mechanisms to detect digital identity compromise such as credential theft, account takeover, cookie theft, malicious automation, and impersonation.
• Collaborate closely with Identity Product and Engineering teams to embed security within authentication, passkeys, WebAuthn, device trust, account recovery, and identity verification.
• Lead innovation in emerging identity security domains including human versus agent detection, delegated authorization, agent trust scoring, and AI-driven security models.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Cybersecurity, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Strong software engineering skills in building large-scale distributed systems.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, Go, or similar.
• Experience designing APIs, event-driven architectures, data platforms, and distributed services.
• Knowledge of cloud-native infrastructure and modern system observability techniques.
• Understanding of secure software development principles.
• Ability to approach ambiguous technical challenges with practical engineering solutions.

Preferred Experience Areas

• Consumer Identity Security including protection against account takeover, identity risk evaluation, and authentication security.
• Cybercrime intelligence, including phishing ecosystems, credential theft, infostealer malware, and threat intelligence engineering.
• Device Intelligence such as device fingerprinting, reputation management, graphing, attestation, and secure device identification.
• Identity Technologies including WebAuthn, Passkeys, FIDO2, OAuth, OpenID Connect, session security, adaptive authentication, and identity federation.
• AI and Agent Security covering agent identity, delegated authorization, identity provenance, autonomous security systems, human-versus-agent detection, AI-assisted investigations, and agent trust modeling.
