DevOps and Cloud Engineer

About the Role

Australia possesses exceptional talent to develop world-class AI infrastructure, which has historically been exported abroad. Now, we aim to create sovereign infrastructure locally. After successfully completing a proof of concept, we are scaling our sovereign AI and HPC cluster. This role focuses on hands-on infrastructure management from the outset—not just monitoring dashboards.

The platform we are developing is designed to support cancer research, scientific computing, and vital AI workloads impacting Australia's future capabilities. Unlike building SaaS tools, this is infrastructure that will transform what Australia can achieve technologically.

We are an early-stage Australian startup expanding our DevOps team. We are seeking a DevOps and Cloud Engineer to take ownership of the infrastructure layer, reporting to the Director of DevOps. This is a full-time, Sydney-based position requiring full work rights or permanent residency.

Responsibilities

• Manage and operate our AWS cloud environment including EC2 instances (GPU-enabled), RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, VPC and other supporting services.
• Develop automated scripts for startup and teardown cycles to minimize costs during idle periods and overnight.
• Create and maintain the provider integration layer linking our orchestration engine with multiple compute environments.
• Establish and sustain CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code for the entire platform.
• Configure real user-centric performance monitoring, excluding synthetic and internal test traffic.
• Track weekly infrastructure expenditure and maintain runbooks and architecture summaries for technical and investor reviews.

Requirements

• Extensive, practical experience with AWS services, especially EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, and VPC.
• Proven skills in infrastructure as code with tools like Terraform, AWS CDK, or equivalents.
• Experience designing CI/CD pipelines supporting multi-service backend architectures.
• Competence in containerized workload deployment and managing GPU-based compute instances.
• Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools such as CloudWatch or Datadog.
• A strong focus on cost management of cloud infrastructure with an active approach to controlling spending.
