Database Engineering Team Manager

About the Role

Squarespace is seeking a Database Engineering Team Manager to lead the team overseeing backend infrastructure such as MongoDB, CockroachDB, and Kafka clusters. The team provides reliable, scalable services to support both internal product engineering and end users of the Squarespace platform. This role is hybrid, based in the Dublin office three days per week, and reports to the Senior Engineering Manager of Databases.

Key Responsibilities

• Mentor and guide software engineers to perform effectively, especially in ambiguous situations.
• Define the team scope and recruit a well-balanced engineering group that works cohesively.
• Support career growth of direct reports via frequent one-on-one meetings with constructive, actionable feedback.
• Promote a positive team culture by recognizing achievements and motivating team dynamics.
• Continuously assess and improve team efficiency and effectiveness.
• Develop deep knowledge of local systems to inform architectural and design decisions.
• Collaborate across Product, Design, and Engineering teams to define and implement optimal roadmaps.
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams including Marketing, Data Science, and Business Operations to strengthen collaboration.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum 3 years recent experience managing a product engineering team of four or more engineers.
• At least 7 years industry experience deploying applications within large, multi-contributor codebases.
• Exceptional ability to translate, document, and communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Strong technical knowledge enabling informed assessments of product engineering trade-offs.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive culture that prioritizes psychological safety alongside technical excellence.

Compensation and Benefits

• Annual salary range between €93,000 and €143,000 EUR, depending on qualifications and experience.
