Role Overview
As a Data Center Technician at Microsoft, you will be responsible for setting up, staging, and deploying hardware systems within Microsoft’s global data centers. The position involves diagnosing and troubleshooting equipment issues, executing hardware decommissions for routine changes, and following strict Standard Operating Procedures. Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) group powers core cloud services such as Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Azure. With over 200 data centers worldwide and millions of servers, the CO+I team supports services for more than one billion users and 20 million businesses across 90+ countries. Responsibilities
- Conduct diagnostics and troubleshooting in line with standard protocols to rapidly identify malfunctions and replace defective hardware with minimal disruption.
- Perform post-deployment quality inspections ensuring grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling meet safety standards and network design requirements.
- Decommission hardware for straightforward upgrades or refreshes, such as memory enhancements and system rebuilds, adhering to prescribed procedures.
- Communicate, report, and escalate incidents appropriately within the data center operations hierarchy.
- Guide and assist fellow technicians in completing complex tasks.
- Complete all mandatory training, observe experienced colleagues, and gain practical on-the-job experience.
- Foster a collaborative and efficient team environment by actively sharing information, participating in meetings, and monitoring team progress.
- Take ownership and accountability for service quality, completeness, and overall user experience, demonstrating pride in managing data center facilities.
- Uphold Microsoft’s core values and culture in daily work practices.
Qualifications
- Minimum education of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of computer hardware components.
- Experience supporting IT equipment or related technology is preferred.
- Ability to successfully clear Microsoft and customer-specific background security checks, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hiring and subsequent checks every two years.
- Preferred but not mandatory certifications include CompTIA A+, Server+, Network+, and Basic Structured Cabling (BSC).
