Data Center Facilities Technician, Mechanical

About The Role

The Data Center Facilities Technician (Mechanical) at Google is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and support of complex electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems in data centers. These systems include chillers, air handling units, pumps, CRAC/CRAH units, and more. You will play a crucial role in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing piping and mechanical system components to ensure optimal data center performance.

The position requires commitment to safety and environmental standards, with duties encompassing material handling and use of safety equipment. It involves responding swiftly to abnormalities or emergencies to reduce downtime and enhance the efficiency and reliability of critical infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect and perform repairs and maintenance on various mechanical and piping systems within data centers.
• Assist and collaborate with technicians by interpreting blueprints, schematics, and operational sequences; conduct system tours and evaluate equipment status.
• Ensure operational uptime and upkeep of water pumps, treatment systems, HVAC, and control/monitoring equipment.
• Operate and monitor facility systems, promptly addressing any abnormal conditions.
• Support new mechanical equipment startups, commissioning, and integration into existing infrastructure.

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate degree, trade certification, or equivalent practical experience in a related technical area.
• A minimum of 5 years' experience in Mechanical or HVAC roles within commercial or industrial environments.
• Capability to safely handle materials up to 50 lbs, including use of ladders, platforms, and personal protective equipment following ergonomic and safety protocols.
• Flexibility to work non-standard hours and various shift rotations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Over 5 years of experience maintaining mechanical or cooling distribution systems or related construction/technical fields.
• Background experience in data centers, hospitals, or power plants preferred.
• Familiarity with data center-specific mechanical systems such as chillers, pumps, AHUs, CRAC/CRAH units.
• Competency in using meters, sensors, diagnostic tools, and standard hand tools for troubleshooting and calibration.
• Effective communication skills to liaise with contractors performing maintenance or upgrades on data center infrastructure.
