Job description

Role Overview

The Customs Classifier will be responsible for ensuring precise tariff classification and adherence to customs regulations for import and export shipments. This role plays a key part in facilitating smooth customs clearance and delivering exceptional service to customers.

Key Duties

  • Classify goods in alignment with customs regulations and the international harmonized system (HS) codes.
  • Examine shipment documentation, such as invoices and packing lists, to verify accurate tariff classifications.
  • Work closely with clients, freight forwarders, and internal departments to gather comprehensive product details and clarify classification queries.
  • Stay updated on customs policies, trade agreements, and tariff schedules to ensure compliance and provide accurate advisory to customers.
  • Identify and rectify any classification or documentation inconsistencies, maintaining clear and proactive communication with relevant stakeholders.
  • Liaise with the Australian Border Force and other regulatory bodies to maintain compliance with governmental requirements.
  • Keep detailed records and documentation concerning tariff classifications and customs clearance workflows.
  • Monitor industry developments and customs regulation changes to find opportunities to enhance processes.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Completed secondary education or equivalent; certifications in specialized equipment usage or relevant subject knowledge are highly preferred.
  • For Level I: Minimum of 2 years’ experience in customs clearance.
  • For Level II: Minimum of 3 years’ customs clearance experience.
  • For Lead roles: At least 4 years of experience in customs clearance.

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer usage.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong organizational skills with high accuracy and attention to meticulous detail.
