Job Overview
The Custodian position supports Vallivue School District by ensuring students and staff experience a safe, clean, and comfortable learning environment. This role involves facility maintenance, cleaning, minor repairs, grounds upkeep, and adherence to safety and environmental regulations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Board-determined experience in plant operation, maintenance, cleaning systems, repairs, security, HVAC, carpet care, housekeeping, and safe handling of hazardous materials.
- Knowledge of material safety data sheets and asbestos abatement protocols.
- Physical capability for extended standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, bending, twisting; moving furniture and equipment; lifting objects up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 90 pounds; ladder climbing.
- Manual dexterity to handle tools and perform cleaning and minor repairs.
- Motivated, able to work under pressure and deadlines while maintaining positive relations with students and staff.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; ability to maintain confidentiality.
Primary Responsibilities
- Open and secure buildings daily; ensure doors/windows locked and lights off.
- Verify exit doors open and panic bolts function correctly during occupancy.
- Operate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems appropriately and efficiently.
- Conduct regular preventive maintenance and repairs; report major issues to supervisors promptly.
- Move furniture/equipment as needed for school activities.
- Perform thorough cleaning of classrooms, offices, library, faculty rooms, corridors, bathrooms, locker rooms, cafeteria, windows, and fixtures daily.
- Replenish paper and soap supplies in restrooms.
- Maintain clean and orderly maintenance closets.
- Use supplies and chemicals safely following manufacturer instructions.
- Maintain exterior grounds including sidewalks, driveways, playing areas; snow removal and salting as required.
- Perform groundskeeping tasks such as grass cutting, tree trimming, leaf raking, and litter removal.
- Carry out summer tasks like gutter cleaning and painting.
- Display the U.S. flag on school days.
- Keep detailed records, communicate necessary repairs between shifts, and follow legal requirements related to safety, environment, and waste disposal.
- Wear district mandated uniform when required and remain on site throughout shift.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and emergency assistance.
Additional Information
- This is an "employment at will" role as defined by the district.
- A criminal background check and fingerprinting are mandatory; felony convictions defined by Idaho Code disqualify applicants.
- Performance appraisals conducted annually by maintenance supervisor and/or building principal.
