Job description
Role Overview
Perseus Mining (Tanzania) Limited (SMLC) is looking for a Community Relations Superintendent to oversee and lead the company's community engagement efforts. The appointed candidate will develop and manage community relations programs, collaborate closely with local communities, government officials, and stakeholders to build positive interactions, address community concerns, and support sustainable development goals. The role demands adherence to Tanzanian legal framework and international best practices in community engagement, ensuring all contractors comply with established procedures and protocols.
Reporting Structure
- Reports to Community Relations Manager and Construction Manager internally.
- Works alongside the Nyanzaga project team.
- Acts as the liaison for various departments in meaningful consultations with project stakeholders.
- Coordinates with government agencies and industry members to align community programs with official objectives and standards.
- Maintains good relations with regulatory bodies.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute community relations strategies aligned with corporate objectives and local laws.
- Serve as the main liaison between the company and local communities, ensuring open dialogue.
- Lead community engagement activities such as public consultations, meetings, and awareness programs.
- Handle and promptly resolve community grievances and concerns.
- Partner with government, NGOs, and other stakeholders on community development projects.
- Monitor and report social impacts of mining activities, ensuring compliance with social and environmental standards.
- Manage and train a team of community relations officers for professional community interactions.
- Prepare and submit regular reports detailing activities, challenges, and suggestions.
- Support fair and transparent resettlement and compensation processes.
- Uphold corporate ethics, social responsibility, and sustainability commitments.
- Ensure distribution of information regarding the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) implementation to all stakeholders.
- Be present within local communities daily to address issues and build relationships.
- Assist in monitoring stakeholder engagement internally and externally.
- Perform any additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Community Development, Public Relations, or related field.
- Minimum seven years' experience in mine site community roles with at least five years in supervisory or superintendent capacity.
Skills, Knowledge, and Attributes
Technical Skills
- Proven experience in community relations, stakeholder engagement, or social performance in mining or extractive sectors.
- Strong understanding of Tanzanian legislation on community relations, corporate social responsibility, and local content requirements.
- Experience managing social development projects at operational or site level.
- Expertise in planning and executing community programs within project environments.
- Ability to work effectively in multicultural settings and foster strong stakeholder relationships.
- Leadership abilities to nurture a positive team environment.
Non-Technical Skills
- Active listening skills to genuinely understand stakeholder feedback and concerns.
- Effective leadership to guide teams and manage complex projects.
- Strong organizational skills for multitasking and stakeholder management.
- Confident and clear public speaking skills for community and public presentations.
- Fluency in English and Swahili (written and verbal); basic knowledge of Sukuma language is an advantage.
- Adaptability, resilience, and ability to maintain professionalism in dynamic environments.
- Self-confidence to interact effectively across organizational levels.
- Competence in planning, scheduling, and prioritizing tasks.
- Good computer literacy with proficiency in standard and specialized software.
- High personal integrity and accountability, including financial responsibility.
