About the Company and Role
Alstom specializes in transport networks and mobility solutions ranging from high-speed trains, metros, monorails, to turnkey systems and infrastructure. Their subsidiary, Bombela Maintenance, employs 160 professionals dedicated to delivering reliable maintenance services for the Gautrain system. They are currently seeking two Communications Technicians to join their team at the Gautrain Maintenance Depot in Midrand, Johannesburg.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and execute scheduled preventative maintenance following established schedules and technical procedures, planning upcoming tasks and coordinating engineering hours.
- Act promptly during emergencies or system failures to restore services swiftly, conduct root cause analysis, coordinate resources, and develop strategies to prevent recurrence.
- Diagnose faults and malfunctions through testing, calibration, component replacement, and repair, proposing improvements to supervisors.
- Perform regular and proactive inspections on communication and IT equipment to ensure compliance with standards, issue corrective maintenance plans for any discrepancies, and liaise with stakeholders to maintain and improve system conditions.
- Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols and regulatory compliance requirements at all times.
- Maintain robust communication and coordination with internal teams and external contractors to foster cooperation and resolve challenges effectively.
- Exemplify personal accountability and teamwork by anticipating issues, monitoring progress, and upholding company values in all activities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma in Electronics Engineering or equivalent.
- At least five years' experience in a maintenance role involving communication subsystems like CCTV, Public Address systems, PABX, Fibre Optics, SCADA, or similar.
- Strong skills in administration, production output management, and work planning.
- Familiarity with hand tools and troubleshooting techniques.
- Knowledge of occupational safety regulations (specifically Act 85 of OHSA).
- Valid driver's license and medical fitness certificate.
- Ability to work independently, operate at heights safely, and possess normal color vision.
- Familiarity with various communication systems and report writing is advantageous.
- Flexibility to work shifts and be available on standby, including weekends and public holidays.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and knowledge of operating systems such as Linux and Microsoft Windows (advantageous).
